Any suggestions? I wasn't able to communicate from the camera to the my computer on either a mac or PC. Do I just need to connect a router for this to work, or is there a way to communicate between two ipaddresses over a switch? That is fundamentally my problem at this time.

Yes, it can be done by manually assigning static ip addresses to every device.

Are you still stuck with the initial setup.....try this ( sorry about pic all i could find fast)
1.Connect PC to switch and camera to switch (for now just use any 2 of the 4 standard ports)
2.On your PC, disable wifi and any other ethernet connections you don't need to connect to the switch/camera.
3.On the PC change ethernet connection (the connection to your switch) ipv4 settings to 192.168.1.100

4. The browser you use is important. Some just don't work well or at all. Palemoon 32bit is solid as is Internet explorer when setting up.
5. Type the following address into your browser 192.168.1.108. it should connect to login page. If it does not try again or try another browser.
If all this fails then try the dahua config tool it works great.
