Noisy Dahua NVR5432-4KS2 Sound proofing ideas, Fan upgrade, Reduce fan speed

Now that is some crazy noise! I did see your posted dB readings reaching up to the 65dB, I was hoping it was a typo. Makes my max reading of 55dB sound like a relaxation tape.

And taking into account the logaritmic scale on the dB ladder, from 55dB towards 65dB is more than 6 times louder!

That's exceptionally loud. I've run into only two things that loud along the way. One was an openeye dvr they got where I work. Insanely loud. The other was a Sony cable box years ago, which was used for our bedroom TV. I took it back to cable the next day and said are you kidding me? They gave me another, silent box. My older 4208-8p here has a fan but it's not crazy loud. It's in a room I don't hang out in.

My phone app might not be accurate, but I took this screenshot. I will video the test tomorrow...Screenshot_2018-10-13-10-40-46.png

Mine is loud also, looking on with interest....

Hi Steve,

Sorry to hear the issue affects you too, but at least I know it's not just me.

I've added the new fan and speed reducer cable, cost me a total of £15 and about 2 hours of my time, (I had a few snags and had to find tools) a more competent DIYer could do it in under an hour.

According to my phone, today my room was about 34db with NVR off, 43db with NVR running, and 38db with new fan and speed reducer in running NVR.

So it's about 5db quieter, which is noticeable, so probably worth the effort. It's still too noisy to be in my front room where the family watches TV and movies, so I'll still have to place it in my data cabinet. Only now I shouldn't have to sound proof the cabinet

I'll share the comparison video when I get round to it. Here are a few pictures of the process...

The cable and fan, unfortunately both are 3 pin..

I had to hack the 2 pin connector from the original fan, and solder it to the fan speed reducer cable

I then taped up my adapted cable.

The finished look...

Warning before anyone thinks about doing this:
...be safe, even when not connected to the mains PSI capacitors can hold charge like a battery.
...Know that this will almost certainly invalidate your warranty
...the new fan might not cool the PSU adequately, causing it to fail quicker (though my PSU is still getting a lot of air passing through it, and feels very cool.)

Hope this helps

Here is my noise comparison video. Im sure its a far from perfect comparison, but it atleast gives some idea of the noise...

As these are more commercial units, they are probably designed to be installed in a business server/data cabinet somewhere rather than a front room, so noise probably isn't an issue for most.

Even with the new fan, it is too noisy for a living room or bedroom. It will however be fine once installed in my data cabinet. My data cabinet is in a cupboard, but central to the house. With the old fan I think I would have still heard the NVR with this new fan I don't think I will, saving me from sound proofing the cupboard.
In my opinion it's been £15 (cost of fan and cable) well spent, however I wouldn't recommend this option to most as it will invalidate your guarantee. I'd recommend putting it in a room/cupboard where you won't hear it , or buying a different NVR if its for living room/bedroom use.

I hope this thread is useful to others, feel free to ask me any questions here
