Planning to upgrade my home Zmodo 14 camera system... need a little guidance

Ok I’m going for the 3241. To be honest it’s also incredibly confusing navigating the different model numbers and the weird brand names. Everyone talks about Dahua but don’t actually find Dahua brand cameras anywhere. Crazy.

It is still a great performer. I still have two of them doing their thing very well.

This 2MP is on the 1/2.8" sensor, which is a perfect match. People that chase cheap hihger MP end up getting an 8MP that is on this same sensor, so it would need 4 times as much light at night as the 2MP.

Translation - a 2MP on the 1/2.8" sensor will kick an 8MP on the same sensor size ALL NIGHT LONG!!!!!!

Glad to hear! Now I have to figure out this VPN thing… I read the primer and half get it.

OpenVPN is simple, but we make it way more difficult than it needs to be lol.

I was there too once with OpenVPN...tried to do all this research to find directions and got to the point I said screw it and just enabled it and kinda of followed what it was asking and it worked.

You will need a DDNS as your WAN IP address is subject to change at anytime by your ISP (although most do not change often) or you are paying for a static IP address. You can use your router to set up a DDNS or use the free one here.

Just log in to your router and enable OpenVPN and see what it says - probably asks you to create a user/PW, DDNS name, encryption method, and create certificate. Then email that certificate to you and save the certificate on your mobile device (or copy it and move it to your device). Then install the OpenVPN app and select the certificate and then connect and you are on your home network.

It really is simpler than our minds make it out to be.

So then basically I’ll have to be on the VPN on my phone in order to access the cameras right?

I subscribe to private internet access maybe I can use it?
 
Only when away from home would you use the VPN.

Your subscription to Private Internet Access HIDES your IP address for illegal streaming and porno addictions LOL.

You need a VPN that puts you back into your home IP address and doesn't hide your IP address.

You are the VPN server in this instance and it is free.

A paid VPN isn't what is needed.

I ended up buying an Asus router(RT-Ax55) just so I could compare apples to apples on this forum. Members had posted a lot of information about setting up a vpn.
My Arris Surfboard cable modem/switch and my Linksys router didn't have the functionality needed to do VPN.
There is a lot of data out there on setting it up.
I fumbled my way around eventually setting up 2 different Vpn's in the router. i got 1 working on my iphone. using trial and error I eventually prevailed. ( i think LOL)
A button appeared in my Iphone after running some script downloaded from the VPn router ( i think LOL)
i should try and post some images for you.

Good choice on your camera. I only discovered that model after 1 year on the forum.

I love love love my Audio enabled cameras. So if this does a good job in my driveway, I'd consider 1 or 2 more.
we had a resident backup into a another residents parked car. She said she didn't even feel any bump. LOL denied knowing she hit anything.
When i played the 5442-ZE camera, you could hear "smack" when she clobbered the car.
The audio proves that she's a motherforkinweaselyshitbag

love it thanks! Actually have an Asus router that I haven’t used in a while so maybe I’ll set up a dedicated network just for the cameras using that router and the VPN

Yep, the audio on this 2MP camera heard the crunch of a drunk backing into a neighbors vehicle 5 houses away LOL. Between that and my LPR, my neighbor was after to go after the person to pay for the repairs!

Now if my neighbors would donate to my camera fund when I help them out LOL.

Somehow, using the Asus App, logs you out of the Asus GUi on your computer. i can't back in at 192.168.1.5. hmmm
Wonder if fuckchanged a setting ( again)
