I have a POE switch, which works fine on my POE camera. I have 1 camera that is not POE. So I purchased a POE splitter/injector combo similar to this : Amazon.com: iCreatin Passive PoE Injector and PoE Splitter Kit with 5.5x2.1 mm DC Connector: Computers & Accessories

When I use both the injector (using a power adapter) and splitter in a non POE port, the camera powers up.

So then, I tried to use the POE part of the switch and only split the POE out of the network cable. My thinking was I didnt need to "inject" power into the network cable if I used a POE port and just use the splitter at the camera end.

Well, only using the splitter from a POE port didnt power the camera.

I'm curious as to why this didnt work. Does a POE port only send power if a devices "asks" for power?

What you've linked to is a passive splitter - it's just cables, no electronics.

Yes, under the 802.3af and later standard.
So what you need to take advantage of the PoE port is an ethernet cable from the port, and at the camera end an active 802.3af PoE splitter, for example such as : TP-LINK TL-POE10R PoE Splitter: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

I ended up just using the injector/splitter that I had purchased.
