Hi Guys,

Maybe you guys have could help me out:

I'm running into an issue when trying to set up my OpenVPN server.

Background: I have a AC86U with the latest Merlin Firmware. I have OpenVPN Client running (with VPN Express).
I also created a OpenVPN Server so I could access my NVR (IP Cam) when I'm not home.

So I'm trying to run both instances at the same time on the router.

Here is the issue I'm running into:
VPN Client (on the router) has to be OFF on the router in order for me to access my NVR from outside.
If I want to leave the router VPN ON, I have to input the NVR IP address in the rules, and make the NVR go through the WAN and not through VPN.

Is it OK to do that, security-wise?

Thanks,

Blarf

If your connected to your VPN on your device then why cant you just connect via LAN address of the NVR?

Just curious as to why you don't use Openvpn server on your asus router. Why are you running a client on the router?

You cannot run both at the same time they are mutually exclusive. Disable the VPN Express it's useless and pointless and a waste of money.

I’m not clear if VPN Express is running on the ASUS router or your mobile device? Maybe you are using VPN Express to bypass regional restrictions, browse porn idk, just use it when you are doing those specific activities where it is needed?

If it’s running on your phone, you can eliminate that and just VPN to your own (home) OpenVPN server to enhance your protection when out on a public wi-if etc. This also means when you are connected you can reach your NVR on your internal network. It also costs you nothing to run your own OpenVPN.

Thank you. VPN express is running on the router (and yes it is to bypass regional restrictions). It seems that I'll just turn off the router client. and just run the expressVPN app as needed.

so it seems that it's not possible to run both. I'll just turn off the router client.

Just for my own knowledge (i'm still learning about all this stuff). If I decide to leave the router client on (with ExpressVPN), but enable a rule to bypass the VPN (client to express vpn), and then decide to connect outside of my home network to check my cameras, using openVPN. Would that cause any security issues?

It seems that it would be the same as if I have the router client turned off...but I'm just speculating as I'm not knowledgeable enough.

Thanks for the help
