My Dell 7040 MT has 8 Gbs of RAM. I currently have 1 camera but plan on having 4. My next camera will be a PTZ. How much RAM should I have when I get the next camera?

for me, I like to have 16GB of RAM now that RAM is affordable .. still a lot of people are running systems with 8GB of RAM, and a lot will depend on what programs / processes you are using ..
I have Win 10 with 16 GB RAM and have 5 active cams (Dahua/EmpireTech) recording on Blue Iris. My RAM usage typically runs below 4 GB anytime I look.
This system is primarily for surveillance. I’m an Apple guy and eBay’d my MT for it. So BI is not a RAM hog?

I'm running a 24 GB on an i5-8500 and it's driving my OCD crazy...4 ram slots and only 3 are occupied!

Your system wont do as many " swap files or paging files) to disk if the Physical ram is there.
I'm running 18 cams with about 20%-30% CPU and 1300-1800 MB rams.
But I got a lot of motion events so the system is rarely idle.

I have 16 GB and 20 cams. Task manager shows 58% memory used but only about 2.5 GB for BI. I'm not sure how accurate that is and whatever system services and all that BI may be using beyond what's shown for it.
I know what you mean. My Hackintosh has 64Gb because I just wanted to max the RAM slots.
What kind of drive is Windows on....HDD or SSD?
If a HDD I've found the investment in a good SSD (I prefer the Samsung 870 EVO) provides the best bang-for-the-buck improvement dollar-wise, not to slight the advantages provided by more RAM, especially if initially deficient.
Since you're a BI user I'll add you would also do a fresh install of Windows using MS' Media Creation Tool on a USB drive, put Windows, BI and BI's "db" folder on the SSD and direct video clips to the HDD, preferably surveillance-rated like a WD Purple or a Seagate SkyHawk
