Hi,

My brother wants to get some security camera's as someone stole his son's bike from right outside his door. I have just got into camera's myself and am having a fun time learning about IP camera's.

My brother was looking at pre packaged systems on amazon that were around 300$ and many of them were BNC camera's with a DVR. I'm trying to talk him into getting IP camera's and some IPC-HDW5231R-Z camera's. He was initially looking at spending around $300 as he does not have a lot of disposable income. I'm going to try to convince him to buy one piece at a time.

So which NVR should he get that is on the cheap side and that either comes with PoE or we can buy a separate PoE switch. He does not have internet, so what I am thinking we can set static IP addresses for all his IP Camera's and view via a monitor connected to the NVR. He eventually wants to get internet but don't think it will be anytime soon. We could setup a wifi router if he wanted to remove view from his LAN, but for now we will probably go without a router.

So I'm thinking maybe 300-400$ for the NVR and then I can tell him to get the camera's later. Any ideas? Sorry I know it's a very low budget because if it was me I would spend the money but I guess if you don't have it you don't have it.

start reading the forum...you dont need to spend 300 on an nvr...you want to match the cameras to the nvr..or use VMS like blue iris or milestone

Thanks. I run Blue Iris but looking to get something idiot proof for him. If he had any issues with windows he would be dead in the water as he doesn't know much about computers. I'll research NVR's on the thread, thanks.

NVRs are no less idiot proof than Windows.....with Windows at least you can remote in...

Hi Philip,

Remember you can skip the NVR and just add a micro-SD card to the starlight, you probably will need to help him wire up for a LAN and small PoE switch.

Hi Mat,

Good idea. He is actually good at running cables and what not. He is a hardware specialist so he has experience running cables and installing equipment and what not. He's just not so good with the software. May be a good idea for him to just get some cameras first and add the NVR later. Something to think about at least.

So my brother has decided to go the PC and Blue Iris route. Trying to find a PC for 500$ or less that will do the job. Something with a 6th or 7th Gen i5 would be nice. Not having much luck so far finding anything though.
