So received my WD 3TB Purple last night, installed it and formatted it in the 7616, and connected one of my 2142FWD-IS cams directly to it to check that everything worked, and it appears to. However, I realized the setup options appear to be endless both in terms of the camera, NVR, etc. Wasn't sure what, if anything, I should be doing re: IP Addresses that are assigned by my router/switch to the NVR, on and on.

Just curious if there is a dummies guide to this stuff and/or whether a thread here exists that someone can think of which would help with the first several "basic" setup steps?

In a nut shell, I'm thinking of setting up my 8 cameras to record on motion; and want to be able to view what is going on from my phone or tablet from the house or away (via iVMS-4500 I assume, though haven't figured out how to get that to connect to my NVR either yet!). Which I assume is a pretty standard setup! :)

Any assistance you guys can provide would be awesome, or point me to some threads. Other step will be to actually physically mount the cameras outside and aim the lenses, but I figured if I can figure out the software aspect of it first I can worry about physical installation later. Well, not too much later as it will start to get really cold out ... then snow!

Thanks!

I'm new to this, so I can only give basic knowledge of Networking how you can setup Remote Viewing:

1) You need to make sure that the NVR gets the same ip address on the LAN. For this one way is to create an ip address reservation in your router's setting page. You enter the LAN settings and add a reservation by typing the mac address of nvr and the desired ip address you want to fix. Now even if you restart your router, your nvr will always get the same ip.

2) You need a way to know your internet ip address (which changes everytime you restart your router). For this there's a setting for DDNS (dynamic dns) in your nvr or your router. Preferred location for this setting is your router. You can read online tutorials for creating DDNS.

3) You need to port forward (I'm not sure but probably port 8000) and forward it to the LAN ip address you've set in step 1.

4) Use the DDNS settings in iVMS app

Thanks.. Helpful. Have reserved an address but need to read up on DDNS.

Re ddns. I do have a mynetgear ddns account setup, but it doesn't appear to be in the selections for the NVR. Seems to imply I need a DynDNS, IPServer, PeanutHull, NO-IP or Hi DDNS account?

You dont have to use the NVR to update the DNS...just have your router do it.

Going to move the discussion to the other thread!
