Sneaky Law Enforcement LPR

I was working at a site a few weeks back, and saw a contractor setting up One of those mobile speed radar signs that show your speed to try to slow you down. I had a better look and had to ask about it and then saw the LPR on it. So these are being used for local law enforcement and I ask about the camera and was told that the plate capture is also being sent live to a regional database,guessing it the feds or state.
Gathering your plate for???

Man, wish I could place one of those on my curb! :lol:
 
Even without cameras, I'm pretty confident most of those "your speed is" signs at least keep a log of timestamped speeds. Some transmit real time speed data.

They also add speed sensors to some traffic lights that make them turn red when people are speeding either to slow / annoy or to write two tickets. I used to live near one of these that would always turn red in the evening unless you were going 5 miles below the speed limit.
 
In my area, speeding by these used to result in a ticket, like how red-light cams work.
 
I was pretty much alluding to that in my OP, The is definitely not for speed but for gathering intelligence in targeted area. The speed part is just a decoy but it does gather that Info too.

If you are paying any attention to the news as of late, Law enforcement is using search warrants to get information from the Popular DNA databases to solve OLD cold cases as well as recent crimes, I also feel the same way about Uber and Lift, The database know who you are and where you are going. We all carry tracking devices that most of us feel are our left arm and cannot live without. We have been conditioned to accept this as normal way of life in the digital age we all live in. Sometimes I feel the the frog in the slow boiling pot.

They are data mining everything they can, everywhere they can. We easily give up our rights every time we click ok to a contract.
They also know the signs are abused. Meaning people intentionally speed up. I would expect LPR's and Facial Recognition will be everywhere soon.
When did you think you had any privacy? I would be more concerned with online habit recording. My IP's DNS now records my activity after they stated they would not do that. Easy to fix for me but everyone else is clueless.

So, There are a LOT of Newbees here to networking, why don't you school us on what you are doing to avoid your ISP's DNS or tell us what alternative DNS servers you are using that Guarantees anonymity, that would be nice.

Easiest is to use a VPN.

Get a VPN. I use PIA and a WRT router/OpenVPN so the whole house is on VPN.

yea Cool, VPN's are covered here on the forms heavily but usually not whole house VPN's routers. What are you running for your whole house router?

Asus RT-X88U models (other Asus as well I know ) fresh off the shelf has the ability to set the whole house on a vpn. One problem I've seen, I haven't dug into it though, is that if I have my whole house running out through a vpn, then to vpn back into it to see the BI5 feed doesn't work. Even if I change my incoming IP to that of the vpn.

So effectively when I'm out of the house, it doesnt run an outgoing vpn and then I can get back in to see everything.
 
yea, the overhead on running the whole house on a vpn router can slow things down for sure.

I have no speed issue with VPN. Quite the opposite. My IP throttles me, so when I switch to VPN I get my full speed minus some overhead.
area651 I run a script on the router firewall to set ip tables that I want to skip the VPN such has access to Plex, FTP, and incoming http services. Otherwise they won't work correctly.
All this was explained in a DD-WRT post and I just copied it over.
