SOLVED: Do not upgrade to 5.6.0!!! Much worser exposure/focus performance

Hi,

Ok... I have an update RE the firmware 5.6.0 build 190130 in relation to Hikvision H3 PTZs, specifically the model PTZ I have is a DS-2DF8236IX-AELW. It's taken nearly 11 months since I first applied version 5.6.0 to my PTZ in March 2019 and then contacting Hikvision support to advise of the problem with noise reduction not performing as well as what it did under version 5.5.6. I was contacted recently in December 2019 (after constantly chasing Hikvision Support) by one of their product specialists. They were really helpful and they were able to arrange for a firmware update that I applied to my PTZ.... Still version 5.6.0 however build 190701.

I have attached the digicap.dat file.

File size is approx. 116MB

Quick rundown of my issue... Since applying version 5.6.0 the noise reduction (NR) function wouldn't remove noise from my PTZ image. Weirdly if I modified the NR value to say 55 (out of 100) from say 50 the image would be nice-n-clear and then moved and zoomed the PTZ at the same time using my DS-1200KI keyboard, when the PTZ stopped moving the image was still noisy/grainy. Or if I activated a preset or if the PTZ moved and zoomed via Smart Tracking when the PTZ stopped moving the image wouldn't clear up like it would under version 5.5.6. The image noise was the equivalent of having the NR value set to 32 or 33 (out of 100). It was especially noticeable at night when the PTZ was in IR mode and the noisy/grainy image was worse again in colour mode at night. If I moved the PTZ separately to zooming the image would clear up once the PTZ stopped moving. Or if I zoomed the PTZ without moving at the same time, again the image would clear up once I stopped zooming. However, do both at the same time and NR wouldn’t remove the grainy image.

I tried re-applying version 5.6.0 build 190130, resetting the PTZ to factory defaults (several times). Adjusting Exposure and Image values, with and without WDR etc. etc. I provided a great deal of footage to Hikvision Support. I asked if they would downgrade my PTZ firmware version to 5.5.6 however they were reluctant to do so and therefore provided a revised firmware version. Whilst this new version fixed my problem with noise reduction, I still prefer the way that version 5.5.6 implemented ‘Exposure’. With 5.6.0 the ‘Exposure’ slide bar adjustment was removed. I found that (for example) car license plates (number plates) that are highly reflective at night, don’t dim down enough so the license details can be seen at night when the PTZ is in IR mode. I have to adjust the Image Brightness to a value of 9 (out of 100) whereas I could leave the image values at 50 (the default) and areas of over-exposure would dim down sufficiently. I also provided Hikvision footage of this highlighting how version 5.6.0 didn’t perform the same as 5.5.6.

I don’t have a response from Hikvision Support as yet re the exposure issue (I’m referring to it as an issue) however I can work around exposure by adjusting Image Brightness and WDR values. IMO however it doesn’t perform as well as version 5.5.6. The more frustrating of the two issues however was noise reduction. I’m certainly happy to have NR back similar to version 5.5.6. I do regret upgrading to 5.6.0 due to not being able to downgrade. At the time of upgrading the EU Hikvision firmware portal where I downloaded version 5.6.0 didn’t have release notes advising that downgrading wasn’t possible. Anyway, I’ve learnt my lesson about upgrading for the sake of upgrading (so to speak).

Hopefully if 5.6.0 is giving others the sh1ts the revised firmware I have attached will help.

Cheers!

Sorry, the digicap.dat file appears to be too large to attach. Here's a URL like to the FW on Google drive...

Cheers

I have v5.6.0 build 190128 for your model, not sure if it would be any different. I've asked around about downgrading from v5.6.x to an earlier firmware with full access to the shell but haven't had any feedback. I'll try on Monday if I can get my hands on the camera.

Is the following what you are referring to? There may be a way to access the setting even if it's no longer directly available.

The exposure level and mode options are hidden in the camera's webGUI>Configuration>Image>Display Settings for some of the newer firmware. With some fiddling, it's possible to reveal the hidden settings as seen In the image below. It might be possible to capture the HTTP requests for these settings and configure them via ISAPI. I'll try on a test camera over the weekend.

Hi Stewart, thanks very much for this!!! Having access back to the 'Exposure' slide bar would be fantastic! Champion!

Cheers,

Tom

I've done some basic testing and results are promising. Using ISAPI, I'm able to set the hidden exposure settings. I don't have the same camera model as you so it may take some back and forth to test your model.
Do you have the following available?
  • Windows PC on the same LAN as the camera
  • Able to access the camera's webGUI
  • IE11 and Chrome loaded

Hi, I have all three of the components you mentioned... lead on! (thanks very much again) :-)

Ok, you need to enable the CGI (common gateway interface).
Our cameras are not identical but hopefully the GUI is comparable.
Using IE11, open the camera's webGUI and make the following changes:
In Configuration>Network>Advanced Settings>Integration Protocol:
Tick Enable Hikvision-CGI and set the authentication to digest/basic.
Then create a admin level user with the same user/pass as the camera’s admin credentials.

Also check Web Authentication is set to digest/basic in Configuration>System>Security>Authentication

Reboot the camera once all the settings are complete and try that URL in Chrome again.

Onto it now... thanks again

Could be one of the following:
Check the Network Service options - match them to the below.

Temporarily disable the Windows Firewall or Antivirus firewall.

Try again and let me know.
