Swann NVR & PoE Switch

Looks like this thread is a few years old, but first time poster here but I am in a similar boat as simplex and Mrvelous. I need to mount cameras in my garage and have no ethernet out there. I am looking at the swann 8 channel NVR8-7300 or 7400. If I use powerline adapters to get ethernet out there, and either buy a POE switch or power injectors for each camera, will this work? Id rather buy Ip cameras instead of BNC cameras.
 
I am successfully using a POE switch and Powerline Adapters with the Swann NVR7300 and NVR7400. The garage has a 110v feed from the same circuit panel as the house so the Powerline adapter works fine. I have (2) cameras mounted on the garage using 110v adapters for power and their network connection is supplied from the Powerline Adapter and a simple 5 port 100Gb switch plugged into the Powerline. I suppose you could put a POE switch in the garage, too. The NVR has no trouble finding the cameras that were plugged into the POE switch. I don't recall the models of POE switch, power adapters, PowerLine Adapters, or simple switch but I can drop over my buddys house and get them if you really need them.

Thank you for posting AND so fast. I have been searching with little help. Swanns customer service towed the company line and said "we do not reccomend it" But if it works I am game. Some people have suggested using Power injectors for each camera instead of power adapters. But if its all the same I may just use a POE switch and would that hopefully supply the cameras power as opposed to the adapters? Also...if you get the brands and model numbers that would be great...but no hurry. I am not building this tonight.

Edit....Also...Where is the NVR? Im assuming its is in the house connected to the ROuter?

No worries. I'm just sitting at my desk geeking out on a saturday afternoon instead of doing yard work and I get how frustrated you probably are in mid project on a Saturday and can't get answers!

A POE switch should work fine in the garage. Microcenter has one for $49. The 110-12vdc(?) power adapters were $3.99 from some crappy seller on Amazon so I bought 6. I'm glad I did because one was DOA. Not sure if they are 12v or 5v - check the spec first. He had electrical power near the cameras so it was an easy choice. I also had a 5 port switch laying around so it got conscripted, so overall I saved a few bucks on a second POE switch.

To be clear, you can pretty much provide power to the cameras any way you want. POE switch, POE Injector or 110v adapter.

Thanks again for being a fellow nerd searching forums on a saturday!. To be honest I havent even bought the system yet because I want to make sure its possible for it to work first. Microcenter is perfect as I live near the minnesota one and have a few giftcards to burn. I didnt want to use them on the system because Id have to pay tax so I wanted to buy that online which is why I wanted to make sure it works before ordering :-).

Sorry I edited my post above a few times Where is the NVR for your system? Im assuming its in the house attached to the router? and the powerline adapter is also attached to the router on a seperate port, or do you have them connected in series? Router>NVR>powerline adapter
 
For this guy's house we have the NVR in the living room with a 28" monitor so he and wifey can see what's going on in the yard or on the porch. From a security aspect that's not the best idea as bad guys will see it, take it, and tada no video evidence! But that's what they wanted.

There is a cat5e cable running from the NVR to the POE switch in the basement. Be aware that the $49 switch has 4 POE and 4 NON-POE ports. All of the camera cables terminate at the POE switch. Two cameras (FrontPorch and BackYard) use the POE ports and the other two (Garage1 and Garage2) are connected to the switch that is connected to the Powerline Adapter in the garage. The other end of the Garage Powerline Adapter uses one NON POE port on the switch.

There is a final cat5e cable running from the POE switch to their Comcrap router. Technically this still gives him a bunch of unused POE ports on the NVR and 2 POE ports on the switch, so depending where he wants his next camera, we got options.

I would go for the NVR8-7400 or later as this is newer and has 4MP cameras. Also, I'm going to assume you will use the mobile app so be sure to use the QR code for setup as it's much less of a pain in the butt than playing with dynamic IP services.

Here is the setup I have planned. NVR attached driectly to router in my office and powerline adapter attaced to outlet in office. Other powerline adapter in outlet in the garage, connected to a 4 port POE switch, and all four cameras connected to that POE switch. Does that sound like it will work just fine?

Also...how much draw do these put on overall internet bandwidth?
 
Sorry for the delay, had to be social with some friends... Your config sounds fine. I recommend taking the cameras directly out of the box and connecting them to the NVR first to make sure they run ok before you bring in the POE and Powerline equipment. If you can buy them from Costco, even better, but stay the hell away from Lorex. Swann worked fine for both houses that I wired. Lorex sucked eggs and was returned in a week.

Something else to consider with the Powerline Adapters is that you can get them with built-in WIFI access points, depending on the model. You will get at least one RJ45 jack and having wifi in the garage/yard area might be handy as well.

I can't say exactly how much bandwidth they use but I don't think my buddy has a really high speed connection to Comcrap and they do just fine on the mobile app. He does not have a smart phone and rarely looks at the cameras on anything other than the big monitor (very senior citizen), but when I connect up with the mobile app on my phone everything runs great.

YOu have been a tremendous help today. I plan on going with the swann 874004. The best price with delivery and tax right now is direct from the manufacturer. Thank you again for your time and help. I will come back here and post when I get everything working. (fingers crossed)
 
Shouldn't be a problem. But if Costco is within a few bucks I would go with them. Absolutely no hassle returns and they add a free year of warranty on top of Swann's.
 
Sometimes there is something to be said for dealing with a local brick and mortar store. Like having a local throat to choke when something goes terribly wrong :)
 
Just wanted to come back and confirm that it works. I have the NVR and a powerline adapter attached to my router in the house. I have the other powerline adapter and an 8 port POE switch in the garage with the cables going to all four cameras and both the PC app and Mobile app have no problem finding the cameras. I havent mounted anything yet because I wanted to try it out and make sure it works first but I am very excited. Thank you to MrVelous for the help. I hope other people find this thread and find it useful as well.
 
New to swann. Trying to install remote cameras over a Ubiquiti wireless connection. NVR won't see the camera's. There is something under the network tab on the NVR regarding a switch. I am unfamiliar on how to set that up. The cameras all have an IP address of 172....and my network is all 192.... I have no problem seeing other devices on the network, just cant see the cameras. Most likely due to the fact that the IP address is wrong. Doesn't seem to easy to change all the address' of the cameras either. Any help would be appreciated.
 
My brother has this nvr (Swann 7300) and wants to upgrade one camera to a dahua 8232. Im not familiar with the nvr. Will this upgrade be a plug and play job or is there something else we need to do?
 
Running a POE switch with 2 cameras, one run from switch to Port 1 of the NVR8-8850. Does not work with more than one camera. The Admin interface "quick add" does not list the second camera to manually assign to a port. These are all swann cameras NHD-886 and NHD-887F with all updated firmware V8.1.0-20220418. Interestingly, I can disconnect either one and both work independently. When I connect both, only one or the other will come online. I've seen posts where some have gotten working but definitely not in this setup. The port on the NVR will only recognize 1 and the "quick add" tool does not see any other cameras on the network at all.

What is another brand thats SWANN quality camera but easier interface? I'm thinking to just drop the DVR, reconfigure the cameras through their admin screen (burdensome swann process) to my 192.268.x.x settings and connect through ONVIF and RTSP to record on SecuritySpy. SecuritySpy has good motion detection, it's easy to pull the 1 hour blocks if I need to review activity, and the movie files work on a Mac. They are not in the shitty format Swann downloads which don't play on a Mac without another piece of software to convert the format. The boundary-crossing, pedestrian, face recognition settings on the NVR never worked well for me on past DVRs. On this 8850, they won't even work using the cameras in the package so you can't even set them up. I think I just sold myself....Swann is too proprietary and I don't think it is worth being boxed into their system anymore.
