Troubleshooting Push Notifications

I had push notifications set up on an android phone and they were working properly about a month ago. I got a new phone and am attempting to set up push notifications but I cannot get them to work. I'm not sure if it is something in the configuration or the phone itself. I'm on 5.9.07. I thought on my other phone there was a radio button to enable push notifications in the android app. I don't see anything of the sort on the new phone. I don't know what I'm missing here. Notification permission is enabled on the phone. User I'm logged in as is an administrator.

Any help is appreciated!

Within the last few weeks Google changed something and it now requires you to be on the latest BI update that included the fix.

That was the problem. Wow, what crazy timing that my phone was destroyed in an accident just before google broke notifications. I'm not aware of the Evaluation Version, I was curious how I was updating with an expired subscription. What are its limitations?

When you purchase BI, it allows you to get updates for up to one year.

So you can update to any version within that time period.

So if you load an update that is newer than your one year, it will be in evaluation mode.

So you would have to pay for another years worth of updates. For most people, they find a stable release and do not update until BI adds something they want.

This is one of the few times where something beyond BI's control requires you to have to update. Or go to the pushover app that many of us have gone to.

When I first bought BI years ago, I didn't realize it was subscription based. I've had to resubscribe literally every year since then for some reason or another. I can roll back my version and get back to the non-evaluation mode?

It isn't subscription based in the true sense of the word. People are running version 4 and some prior V5 update for years without paying any more.

A version that you paid for will work. Unlike say Ring that if you unsubscribe or don't renew it doesn't work anymore.

But yes, you can run any BI version within the year that you bought BI and BI will work without the evaluation mode.

Valid point, thanks for the correction. I'm not sure what you'd call it. It's the only software I've purchased where you have to pay to get minor revisions and bug fixes. It's unfortunate. Anyway, thanks!

Has anyone had luck with getting specific Alert Tones from each camera on the new BI update (5.9.7.4)? I now only get a typical default Alert Push Tone for all cameras the have Push Notification set to a specific tone.

I'm curious as well. They aren't working on my new phone. I have a unique sound for each camera. My dogs have learned which door to run to by the alert tone. :lmao:

For some reason the new BI app update did not automatically show up on my phones. I went to google play store and updated BI phone app for the Sept 2024 update and specific alert tones work now. Yea! Thanks for Ken's support!

The Android app Sounds with names that have multiple words have an underscore (job_done) separating the words, while Blue Iris itself has dashes (job-done). Those sounds don't work and editing the Sounds folder doesn't seem to change the names in the push configuration dropdown.

How inconvenient that is. My one year is up in July and 2 months later, I have to buy another year. Sounds hokey but can't really complain that the year is 35 bucks. Especially since I waste money on dumb stuff all the time. Guess it is my bad luck.

Did notifications break again? I updated to the evaluation version of 5.9.7.3 - notifications worked when I initially installed but then quit. I see that 5.9.7.4 was released a day after 5.9.7.3 but I don't have the option to upgrade the evaluation version to it..

[edit] I needed to manually download the newer update install file.. I'm getting the error message Push:Failed (404/Requested entity was not found.) to CellPhoneName; check security exemptions, possible software update Req

What I have noticed is that the "Use Legacy GCM" on the mobile device settings page has gone away since version 5.9.8.3 - and that my Android device now does receive push notifications, but that it will only "stack" 25 notifications, and then will stop at that point. Its probably something that Google changed in the android OS. For now the only thing that allows me to receive notifications as well as the BI custom sounds is to clear my notifications from my phone regularly - because after 25 notifications, I will not receive the alert sounds. It has made me realize how much I rely on this feature in order to know what is going on around my house, so I hope that the updates to BI can fix this issue since it seems like something that Google broke.

I had the same issue of push notifications stopped working. Only found this thread today but I purchased updates to see if that would fix it and it did not. Just updated latest again and opened new ports on router that weren't opened. Still weren't work with the same 404 error message if try to do a text in app. I guess / I think the only thing to try now is uninstall and reinstall because even though updates work in app and it shows I'm on latest version, it hasn't fixed it.

Any other suggestions, let me know, otherwise I'll post back an update if uninstall / reinstall fixes it.

So, uninstalled, rebooted, reinstall standalone installer downloaded from blue iris website. Still same issue but on first launch, cameras were already loaded.

So I tried uninstalling again. Delete install folder. Reboot. Reinstall and still same problem and cameras were auto loaded again on first launch.

Do I need to / should I try a clean install? Delete settings folder in app data directory or wherever it is it is pulling cameras up on first launch on new install?

Has been really annoying to not have notifications for months. It broke right when I got a new phone and didn't update it right away and updates had expired 1.5 years ago so I just delt with it. But after paying for updates and updating and now reinstalling and still same issue when it always worked super reliably before for around 4 years now, pretty annoying.

If you want a complete clean install, do the uninstall as normal, then check the following locations for files, you must be an admin user or know the admin password to do these steps

C:\Program Files\Blue Iris 5 - delete folder if it exists
C:\ProgramData\Blue Iris - delete folder if it exists

Then in the registry (run REGEDIT as administrator) - be careful, there is no undo or recycle bin for the registry, you can totally trash your system if you accidentally delete the wrong items!

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Perspective Software - delete folder if it exists
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Perspective Software - delete folder if it exists

I get the "Push: failed ffffffff to iPhone13; check security exemptions and service Login" every now and then. I get 95% of my iPhone notifications, but occasionally, I get this error. Not just one camera, but various ones.
Ken suggested checking "security exemptions", but sadly I am not 100% sure WHERE to to that. He also said it could be a network issue and I CAN believe that!
Now here is where I am asking for help from the group.
1. Where do I specifically look for "security exemptions"?
2. Looking for suggestions on HOW to troubleshoot a network issue that might cause this?
