I just got two hikvision cams (Ds-2cd2342wd-i 4mp turret, one is a 4mm and the other is a 2.8mm. I have profiles setup one for day and one for night. My first question is does it really help the quality setting the res from 1080p to 2688x1520 ? i really cant tell any difference, also what should i keep the sharpness on 0 or keep it at 50. I was also wondering what smoothing is ? right now its set at 50 but again no idea what it does. and finally the night quality seems okay but not great like what thought it would, guess i should of got the 2mp model. any tips it improve the video quality day or night? really i just wanna get that face id . I know it helps to turn down the gain .Wondering if anything more i could do . thanks for the help Ryan

its would be nice if their was a website explaining what all this shit does

if you have a 1080p monitor you wont notice any difference because its scaling down the 4MP image to 1080p.. but if you view them both at 1:1 (no scaling) the higher resolution has more Pixels per Foot..

If you want to improve night quality; add as much lighting as you can..

It seems like most of these cameras have a break in time the first 48 hours they seem a little off but after 48 hours they have a better image . I'm sure it's my mind playing tricks on me..

Between reading and experimenting I'm realizing the cameras purposely do low quality compression to control the bitrate. My assumption of being able to get a 4 mp image from a 4 mp camera was mistaken. I've been able to improve the image quality by adjusting various settings. The ones that make the most difference, so far, are the frame rate, using H264+, and ROI. ROI has the biggest impact, using lower compression for the designated picture area, at the expense of lower quality for the other areas. So far, I can't get even close to the image quality I get from a 3 mp still camera. Still hoping to find more improvements. In my case I tried 1080p, and 2688x1520 is definitely better. If you're running a fast frame rate, maybe the high res improvement is lost.

Does blue Iris support h264+ or would your gpu need to support it . Do you use profiles for day and night ?

The Quality on the 4mp turret 2342 during the day is kick ass, however night image isn't the best. During the day I could get a great facial ID no problem . At night they would have to be very close to the camera. However I'm still messing with settings .

Now I know why most criminals do their business at night.

Your 4MP Turret has a 1/3in sensor size.. its never going to compare to even pretty low quality still cameras..

Check out this post: Dahua 4MP w/IR Cannon Before.. After

Now that I can afford some Dahua Starlight cameras; all of my 4MP cameras and my 3MP cameras will soon be replaced with 2MP Starlights.

@Ryan00... Good thread! I have the same camera you do except it's an LTS brand. I have three cameras and here is what they look like at night. The Patio camera is using the camera IR illuminator only. As you can see there is light from inside the house helping. The Driveway camera is using the camera IR illuminator only but there is a lamp post light helping. The Front camera is using the camera IR illuminator PLUS an external IR illuminator that sends more light to the front steps & door area.
Here are my "Night" settings and screen grabs from each. I'm sure they could be better.

Hey thanks for the post, your cameras look to good to be true, can you get A good facial ID at night with those settings ? Go and walk around the cameras at night and see if you get a good facial ID on yourself. Also noticed your gain is super high and the exposure is kinda low at night

Based on my experience, facial recognition is pretty good within 15'-20' of each camera as long as the person is moving at a normal rate. I am using ROI for the Front camera. Not real sure how much it helps.

I'm using Chrome web browser on a Mac to connect to the BI web server. However, when I connect to the cameras I have to use Safari to get a preview. Chrome will not give live previews. I checked facial recognition at the front door and it's not great. This is a 4mm camera and I'm about 18' away.

I do have a problem with the Driveway camera. There are two motion activated flood lights out there. Once they turn on, it takes the camera about 4 seconds to adjust the exposure. Until it adjusts fully, facial recognition is impossible since everything is over-exposed.

switch em out with dusk to dawn lights then.. the better motion lights have a switch to go to this mode.
