thanks for all the valuable input. There's really no camera I can buy that's going to allow me to keep the camera in its place.Or so I think. The biggest improvement I can do is lower the camera.Which I wasn't to fond of installing them in the stucco. As well as install another one on the opposite side of the garage.
 
IMHO, the camera isn't installed too high (globally), is too high if you want see the front glass of the car as well as who is walking on the road, this camera has a vertical angle of view of 54°, so ... or the car, or the road. Moreover, if you can install on the stucco, you'll have an huge improvement, if the camera is B/W, with IR on, when rainy... Install another one, and you'll be more than ok.

Do you just want to see what is going on or see who did it. For what is going on then it is ok. for who did it is is too high. Test,test, test. get a friend to put on a hoodie, baseball hat, sun glasses at night... ask some one elses to identify the person in your video. If they can not do it then the camera is too high.

Driveways with parked cars need two overlapping cameras.

In fact, I too have suggested to install another one ...
With some customers, before install, I have to bring some (two or three) cameras with me, and show 'em what is possible achieve with one, two (or, if needed, even three) , because, usually, 'by default', most customers think that with a single camera, they can see on left, right , up, down, far, close ... :)

If you don’t mind, what model of camera are you using? Excellent quality. Is there another model other than this that you recommend? I’m currently using a 6 year Lorex LNR 280 package and researching to upgrade.

I have 4 cameras outside, 30 feet high, want to be able to zoom and see clearly 60-80 feet away, both day and night.
Also have 2 cameras inside, just need to see clearly 30 feet or so.

Will be using a NVR with ONVIF.

Those are Dahua 3231 Starlight CVI cameras, virtually identical in performance to the 5231 IP version

Careful on distances.

So if they're really 30ft high?, you'll just get the tops of heads.

Mine are mounted 7ft high and the car door where I'm standing is 15ft from the camera.

You say you want to see clearly at 60-80ft.? Do you mean ID faces at that distance? or just "see" that far. Notice mine "sees" about 700ft to the end of the street, but I can't ID a face with the zoom where I have it set beyond about 30-35ft.

If you want to zoom in to 60-80ft and see faces, you'll want the 5231E-Z5E (5X zoom) or the 5231E-Z12E (12X zoom). I use the Z12 to focus on a spot for tag capture at about 120ft but you're only seeing a strip of asphalt about 10-12ft wide... zoom inherently decreases your FOV

So there is a big difference between "seeing" and Identifying.

Gotcha, reading thru yours and others posts before I ask further questions. Seeing and IDing makes me think a deeper and research more. Ideally both, but as I have already learned from your posts, it will require two cameras each specific to a task to fill my requirements. Have to think / research WIFI vs POE AND ANY TRADEOFFS with WIFI. I have POE on the high up Lorex now, so those replacements would be for seeing, WIFI on a ground level would be the addition to the camera infrastructure, depending on trade offs.

Pic#1 is an Overview camera using a 5231E-ZE with only a slight zoom. Lets call it 6mm zoom

Pic#2 is a 5231E-Z12E zoomed at about 80-85% , in this case about 120ft. Probably 50-55mm of zoom

Both point at the same spot. It takes 2 cameras to both "ID" and still "see" for situational awareness that far out

This is how you should be doing it.. right here .. one camera for a wide view and another for a zoomed shot.

Boom! Yes, exactly what I need. Due diligence in progress. Taking a look at specs,etc now.

1) So the above response takes care of one requirement, what is your recommendation for a PTZ, something around the 12x zoom or greater, that come close to a compromise of the 5231E-ZE and 5231E-Z12E?

2) In addition, what is your experience linking the 5231’s to a WIFI access point with external power. Does a 2.4ghz handle the bandwidth for a high frame rate and resolution?
 
I'm afraid I'm no help on either. I dont own a PTZ, just dont have the need. Unless you're going to be sitting in front of it you're going to miss something. It can't be in all palces at the same time.
 
So I added a second camera on the opposite side of the garage. Its a Dahua camera HDBW5830R-Z. Got to look up the model. I purchased through Andy. The wife doesn't really want a camera mounted to the stucco. Is there drop down mounts I can purchase ?

You can drop a dome camera down from a ceiling using the PFA101 and PFB300C type parts, which is basically a large aluminum tube that is threaded, and the camera threads onto this tube. I will predict that hanging a cam from your soffit down 3' or so in front of your exterior wall is going to look a bit odd.
