dahuas app
I tried gdmss and when I hit the ptz button I get "no permssion message". It operates fine on a computer from a browser.

make sure the user has admin/ptz privileges.
I am using the default admin account as it the only account. It works in Smart PSS.
Could it be because of the firmware?

Try TinyCam, it's works for me on a Dahua PTZ and on a cheapy Trendnet PTZ cam.
If you don't first succeed, try different cams from the list that it comes with.

I tried tiny cam and still no luck, I tried dahua and some others. I am able to view but no zoom.

Thats not a PTZ; its a varifocal.. the zoom is not exposed via ONVIF and its not designed to be zoomed on the fly.
OK so it won't work via a app only from a Web browser?

yeah its intended to be setup initially when installed and then left alone; usually varifocals are too slow to zoom/focus to follow any activity and they dont have preset support either.
