The only cam that I have any experience with was a NestCam which I see has a 1/3" 3MP sensor and 130 degree angle, if I recall correctly.... anyway, I'm thinking that at a wired ipcam of the same spec would be better PQ since it could be recorded with less compression. Have you compared the quality from the NestCam to another wired cam? I would want that quality at a minimum. I would also want that audio quality at a minimum... thoughts?

Thanks,

Robert

the nestcam fov is measured diagonally to make it appear larger...most camera manufactures provide horizontal and vertical numbers...a wired dahua starlight varifocal would blow it away...any cheap 2-3mp camera would beat nestcam image quality...with varifocal you can zoom in and not waste pixels on area you dont need to cover...with starlight you get exceptional low light performance..

Other than the Nest being to wide of an angle for most, what part of the hardware contributes to it being bad....? The 1/3" imager is a great size.... and 3MP sounds reasonable... I guess we don't know what compression is used. Anyway, I believe what you're saying but I want to understand what in particular fails to meet expectations regarding camera performance compared to wired.

Sorry, it posted 3x and when I try to delete them it posted the quote--my mistake. Please delete the duplicate posts if you have admin privileges. Thanks!

its the compression and the 1/3...
it also have weak ir...
The wide angle is a huge factor as well...

Any of these will blow the pants off of the Nestcam: Dahua 2MP Starlight Lineup
Plus Nestcams are horribly overpriced for what they are.

Nest Cam Outdoor comparison with one of the favorite low light cameras here [ available for about the same price per camera as the Nest Cam Outdoor camera ]

Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)
IPC-HDW5231R-Z | Dahua Technology - Dahua Technology

Selected Nest Cam Outdoor Specs w/my notes in [ notes ] comparing a Dahua Starlight Turrent HDW5231R-Z as an example.

Camera - 1/3-inch, 3-megapixel sensor with millions of colors and 8x digital zoom [ vs Dahua HDW5231 1/2.8" 2MP sensor - larger sensor ]
Video: Up to 1080p (1920 x 1080) at 30 frames/sec, H.264 encoding [ vs 50/60fps @ 1080p(1920×1080) ]
Field of view: 130° diagonal [ vs 97°~34° HFOV -> results in better ID potential ]
Operating temperature: –4° to 104°F (–20° to 40°C) [ vs -22° F ~ +140° F .. ]
Weather resistance IP65 rating [ vs IP67 - significantly better ]
Wireless: Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, 2.4GHz or 5GHz (WEP, WPA, WPA2 encryption supported) [ vs WIred PoE - a more reliable solution ]

With regards to Audio - if you require audio please note that there was a good discussion in a forum on that - and the summary was that if you wanted to communicate via audio with someone you should be looking at a voip solution as security camera specs are not designed for that. Note many of the Dahua models are able to record audio as well as video.

The NestCam has a larger sensor otherwise I agree--thanks for chiming in.
