Odd.
The 'll' command at the end of the telnet session shows the files were created :
Code:
[root@dvrdvs /] # ll /mnt/msc1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 131072 Jan 8 00:15 mtdblock1_save
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 16449536 Jan 8 00:17 mtdblock2_save
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 196608 Jan 8 00:19 mtnblock0_save
[root@dvrdvs /] #
If this is via the NVR VGA/HDMI interface Maintenance / import Export menu, you will need to select
*.* for the file type to show.
If it's via a PC, for saving to a safe place, that's a puzzle.

It was indeed on a PC. I'll rerun the procedure again later tonight and see if a different USB port makes a difference.

I final got the saved files off the NVR, no idea what I did wrong the first time. I repeated the process and if was fine.
I'm not experienced with hex editors at all I'm afraid but I opened the saved block0 and this was the closest I could find to what you asked.

I opened the saved block0
That's good - you've got language=1 in 0x2e010, thats English.
And your cameras all report :
<type>english</type
It has to be your choice - but on the face of it:
You have backed up the existing firmware and device settings, giving yourself a snapshot of the as-is status of the NVR.
You have cameras that currently report as being English.
It looks like you'd be safe enough to progress through some web GUI firmware updates and see some of the improved capabilities of the newer firmware.

We really shouldn't have to be this careful about Hikvision firmware updates, just to try avoiding their customer-unfriendly tripwires just aimed at protecting the sales margins of their 'authorised distributors'. It's a piece of nonsense really. In my view.

Hmmmm... firmware mismatch.
Strangely, you might think, that's actually a good thing.
You have already established by several tests that your NVR is set as langauge=1 (EN) despite it being a nominally China-only model 7804.
So it's correct that it should reject the CN firmware.

The 76xxN-Ex and 78xxN-Ex series share the same hardware.
The web GUI update for the firmware from here should be OK : HIKVISION EUROPE

One final question before I give it a go... is it OK to jump straight to the latest firmware?

From 3.0.8 to 3.4.91? I'm seeing lots of comments about missing the versions in between causing problems.

For all the time it takes - and also to experience the reduction in nervousness by doing this multiple times - taking a few steps to get to the final version is a good idea, in my view!

Looking good! Well done.
A recommendation - check out the new 'password reset' facilities, with more than one method of doing it.
An easy method is the Security Q&A one which can then be used at the web GUI login page.
And don't forget to take another export of the device configuration and save it in a known safe place.
For info - there is no longer any telnet access as before, that went away quite a few versions ago.

That is a Chinese market model - I don't think you can upgrade it with stock firmware without it reverting to Chinese menus, and going into a bootloop.
Was it sold as upgradable?
