I have heard that as long as I go with a 1080p monitor or TV I am pretty much good to go.
Even had some decent monitors recommended but I'd like to keep the $ down as much as possible since it will mainly be used for setup,... although who knows I may enjoy looking back at triggers etc on something bigger than my phone?!!!

Anyway what is your opinion on these 2 and which would you choose?

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VN279Q-1920x1080-DisplayPort-Monitor/dp/B010VG2456/ref=sr_1_8?tag=ipctk-20&s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1512148506&sr=1-8&keywords=asus+monitor&th=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008DWITHI/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1

I am leaning towards the 2nd option. I believe it's the "older" model but it still has IPS and also includes a DVI port - that- I may or may not use?!!

Both decent? And which would you choose?

Just curious looney2ns,....why? (I did realize it was the same you recommended earlier,...but I didn't realize it until after I changed the size for budget reasons!)

But they seem almost identical but door #2 a bit cheaper and has that DVI port.

Definitely Not trying to over analyze monitors but I JUST ordered # 2 and want to know if I should cancel and go for #1.

Thank you sir.

EDIT --- Looks like my choice vs239 has no speakers and the other one vn248 does. I am in PA so not allowed to "listen in" on anybody,..but It would be nice to have a monitor w/speakers though I assume.
And MUCH lower power consumption,....canceled and re ordered the vn248.

You can over analyse. I upgraded from a 720p to a 1080p and the difference was pretty minimal.
If viewing video from a long distance, the difference is indeed minimal. You know what they say about 4K television versus 1080p. At normal viewing distances a lot of people have trouble seeing the difference in resolution.

On the other hand if you have a 40 inch 4K monitor just 3 feet away with the Blue Iris console maximized on it, the difference between that and 1080p is tremendous.

Thanks guys. I went with the VN248Q-P . I think it will serve my needs pretty well and be clear enough to make me happy.
I keep telling myself I probably wont even use the monitor - just view on my phone- but something tells me this is incorrect!
Especially if I am home and something gets triggered,...I want to know AND see what's going on. :)

For the monitor connected to my NVR, I used an old 17" CRT monitor that I wasn't using. The NVR has a VGA port, thankfully. The VGA resolution is fine. To save money, an old CRT from Goodwill could be bought - probably for $25. I'd never spring for a 4K monitor to be dedicated to the NVR. The picture improvement wouldn't be that noticeable, from what I've read.

For a remote monitor connected somewhere else in the house is another story.
This thread covered the options in depth:

It also mentions 4K image quality vs lower res monitors.

looney2ns,

True enough.
Seeing details on my VGA CRT may be limited. I've never did a real comparison. Note: I should have mentioned that CRT is only for configuring the NVR, and not for viewing recorded video or live video.
If something "happened", or for live viewing, I use my laptop, w/ SmartPSS, over WiFi or wired, and view the high res main stream recorded images.
For really big, high res viewing, I use tinycam pro sideloaded into a Firestick that lives in an HDMI slot on my 53" LCD Smart TV.
To share "what happened", I download the hi res main stream video to a file. Nothing has ever happened that required I share the video with LEO. Aslo, I never felt compromised by the VGA monitor....

Writing this, I just realized that when I upload videos to YouTube, I haven't been uploading in HD. I just checked and found they're at 360p. Hmmm. Something to check into.

Still, the youtube video quality, even at 360p, seems good. Though not as good when playing back from the NVR to my laptop....
What's your thought of the video quality?

A CRT monitor should never be bought...they belong in the trash heap....you can buy a 15-19 inch lcd monitor for setup any day for $25...

looney2ns,
Thanks for pointing that out.
I didn't click "Publish" for the YouTube videos.
I also learned Pale Moon browser won't show youtube video resolution above 360p. No such limitation w/ Firefox or IE.

You should be able to view the videos now.

Nice catch Fastb. I get lots of wildlife here but haven't seen a coyote. Closest I've come is a fox. Tons of coons, skunks, deer, and squirrels though. Woodcock in season. No partridge yet.

You know this already, but trimming the ornamentals in front of the driveway cam would improve the exposure balance a ton. If you can't do that then a big IR floodlight lighting up the yard would help a lot both before and after any possible trimming. If you can't trim and don't want to add more light, a longer lens to narrow the FOV and miss the plants would also help. Turning off the internal IR alone might help as well, depending on ambient light.

Kawboy12R,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I agree completely! When I put up that cam, the leaves weren't in the FOV at all. The bushes have grown since then, and are overdue for some trimming!

The cam is mounted on 2" PVC connected to a flat plywood base, weighted down with cement blocks. My "Test Rig" is easily moved around to check possible viewing angles. You pb'bly know how "Temporary" goes, LOL! I could easily move the cam upwards along that PVC pipe, since it's held in place with tie wraps. Electrical connections are inside a plastic bag! Hokey, but "temporary" for ~ 1.5yrs. Pic below.

It was one of the first cams I bought as a newbie. WiFi (now wired, after learning the cam would go off line every week or two, requiring a power-cycle to reboot it). And 3.6mm lens which isn't the right size for most outdoor applications. And a bullet, so I have spider headaches. The cam doesn't have IVS (another newbie mistake), but at least no false alerts from spiders! I was so green, but I learned alot.

Auxiliary IR lighting is in the plans, to deal with spiders. But also to brighten nighttime shots and extend the lighting range.

I may relocate the cam to a coyote choke point, since they live somewhere in my steep & wooded backyard. I get 2 to 3 coyote sightings per week. I placed a cam in the backyard, to figure out the route the 'yotes took into the wooded hillside. After trying multiple locations, I learned the coyotes changed their route based on where the cam was placed. WTF? They avoided the cam! I finally deduced the dark red IR LEDs was probably the reason. They're crafty and stealthy! With an aux IR floodlight, I could disable the internal IR, and I may have better luck getting the coyotes to closely walk past that relocated bullet.

We've lived here for 20+ years. We only saw coyotes on our property 2 or 3 times. After getting cams, we were amazed how frequently they walk through! Sometime across our front walk, 10 ft from our front door. Our 3 cats that disappeared over those years were likely caught by coyotes!

Here's some captures of "Coyotes with Meals" heading up my driveway, bringing meals to hungry cubs in the den, no doubt....

PS: I live inside the city of Seattle, but near a wooded area that slopes downhill to the train tracks along the Puget Sound shoreline. And a golf course is nearby. Coyote friendly location! The coyotes live among us, but most neighbors don't know the extent of this co-habitation....

Same here with racoons. There are TONS but you hardly ever see them. I never would have guessed until I put up a crittercam. Try 940nm illuminators to help with coyote captures. No red glow.
