My history,
Had a few weird things happen in the neighborhood. Couple of strangers driving thru, a few car break-ins and door checkers. Working the PM/NOC’s, my wife is home alone. Was thinking about putting up a few cameras to make the wife feel a bit better. Bought a Lorex system from Costco. System quirky, and had difficulty to get work as advertised. Was very disappointed (as many I read on the internet).
Looking for answers to solve some problems with the Lorex system, I came across this site.
Can’t even begin to tell you how much it’s helps.
Just wanted to thank everybody for the great advice.
Lesson learned
1) Read Cliff notes and wiki at least several times. When done, do it again. I’m still pickup things I missed before
2) Buy all of your equipment form Andy and Empire Tech. Don’t make the mistake I did, buying from AliExpress and thinking it was from Andy. Best Service I ever had with an internet vender. [no, I’m not a shrill]
3) Never ever use the cheap cat 5 line that come with the cameras. Learn to crimp your own ‘solid copper’ wire. Still pulling out the old crap line and replacing it with new.
4) Blue Iris is a fantastic program, but don’t expect to be proficient overnight. Been working with it daily for over 2 months. Still only consider myself a beginner. I consider similar to Photoshop ins skill.
5) Mount the cameras lower than you expected. Makes a huge difference.
6) Prepare you pocket book. This stuff is like crack cocaine. Very addictive. You will never be satisfied with what you have. Right now, up to 15 cameras. Working on 2 dedicated license plate readers.
7) Computer. Started to thinking a new H&P I5 would be sufficient, wrong! With 8 cameras (4K), even at 15 frames/sec, to direct disk, the system was maxed out. Ended up splurging with a Gamer I8 Dell from Costco. Have updated to X2 5 purple 6 Terabyte drives, 32Gigs memory, and SSD hard drive. CaChing!
8) Get a helper to pull your Cat5 wire. Make the job way easier
