Hi oldman 11 could you open up internet explorer11 or palemoon.
Type in 192.168.2.64 it should open up a hikvision web page
Type in admin
Then your known password
Does it open a page up with live view?
If so unplug all the cameras
Then open up maintenance find reset but keep user information and IP address
This will reset the nvr to a factory default but keeps your info
After it has rebooted go to security settings and untick illegal log in
The you can try one camera at a time to plug back in
To see if the camera will adopt the nvr password as plug and play

This has me completely whacked - don't have a clue what I am doing. Followed Marku2 and tried my Google browser, just got all sorts of explanations of what a private IP address was.
One even said this was a "bogon" address that should not be on the internet -what am I doing wrong?:embarrassed:

Mark said "internet explorer11 or palemoon."
If by Google Browser you mean Chrome - that won't fully work with the NVR.

Anyway - I have done some instructions for you for using the Hikvision tftp updater to try to reset the cameras so that you have a known password for them.
Here they are:

Here are some instructions for trying to use the Hikvision tftp updater tool to install the same 5.4.5 firmware as is already installed.
This will reset all settings to their default value, leaving the camera in an 'Inactive' state.
When in that state, SADP can be used to find the camera, and 'Activate' it, by creating your own strong password, or the NVR will take it over, using the password set for cameras in the NVR configuration.

The required steps are as follows:
Create a folder on your Windows PC, drop the attached tftpserv.zip file in it, and unzip the contents.
Drop the attached firmware file IPC_2XX2FWD_ML_STD_5.4.5_170124.zip into the same folder and unzip the digicap.dav file within it.
Leave Windows Explorer open, you'll need it later.

Unplug the PC from the LAN and plug it into an unused POE port on the NVR. You said you need to unplug a camera to provide an unused port.
Unplug also the camera that the firmware update is going to be tested on.

To run the tftp updater tool, the PC IP address must be set to 192.0.0.128
There is no need to download anything to do this, it's just a network configuration change.
On Windows 7 (you are probably using Windows 10, not something I'm familiar with, but the steps will be similar) do the following:
Windows Control Panel | Network and Sharing Centre | Local Area Connection | Properties
Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 line.
Select the radio box 'Use the following IP Address' and in the IP address field place 192.0.0.128
Moving down to the subnet mask, use 255.255.255.0
Click OK

Now to run the tftp updater tool.
With Windows Explorer, double-click the tftpserv.exe file that you extracted.
This first time, there should be a Windows Firewall popup saying it has blocked some part of the program.
Click 'Allow'.
The tftp updater window should now be visible, and it should show 'TFTP server [192.0.0.128] initiallised' or similar.
So far, so good.

In theory, all that's required now is to plug the candidate camera back in, and watch the tftp updater window.
If it works OK, there should be several status messages, along the lines of (I don't recall the fine detail) :

Device at 192.0.0.64 test tftp server
Connect tftp server
Downloading file digicap.dav
Downloaded file

But the important status will be :
System update completed

This will take 2 or 3 minutes.

Close the tftp updater.
Start SADP
Unplug and re-plug the camera.
After 20-30 seconds, refresh SADP and check the camera status, looking for 'Inactive'.
If the NVR firmware is new enough - it should automatically connect to the camera, activate it, and add it, in Plug&Play mode.
But before going further, let's see how you get on so far.
Sometimes a POE-connected camera does not work well with the tftp updater tool, in which case the use of a 12v DC supply is needed instead of POE.

Alastair you are a gem! With that much detail how can I fail? To be doubly sure I will still engage help through the process but it all looks very positive, thank you so much! I will check how soon my son can assist me and get right into it.
The NVR packaging tells me the SF version is V3.4.95_17062 and is dated 07/2017 so if that tells you anything in advance of the process, let me know

Very prudent.
But do be aware that the tftp updater capability may no longer exist on those new-model cameras.
And that if it doesn't work on the NVR POE ports, it's also worth trying it with the camera powered with a 12v DC adaptor.

Hi all -just a note to say "Thanks to all who contributed to the solution" My particular appreciation to Alistair and dgwasw, both of who hung in till the end. Sorry, I swapped forums to the HIK Vision camera site without leaving any connection but the name of the new tread I came into was HIKvision camera admin password reset tool but it was not until about page 41 that things "clicked" for me. All sorts of happenings in my life and somehow at that point my "stars" were all aligned? Whatever, I found the information and someone prepared to step this 'old man" through the many little traps, without whom I would never have got there. The support on this site is beyond what many forums achieve, my problem was, most spoke of things I knew nothing about.
Thanks again everyone who helped!!!

Yes, there are a good bunch of helpful, sharing contributors here, covering a lot of ground, giving plenty of learning opportunities.
