Hi guys,

I'm wondering what you guys think is better 8TB Purple HDD, the WD81PURZ 5400rpm or the WD82PURZ 7200rpm?

I've emailed WD also but thought I'd ask the community also.
I will update the thread with WD's response if indeed they respond.

I feel 7200rpm would have higher failure rate and offer no real benefit. Go with 5400.

Hi @Rhodesy

As per the WD data sheet:

The 8TB WD82PURZ MTBF is 50% higher ( better ) than the WD81PURZ

Without additional information to confirm / challenge this I would pick up the WD82PURZ over the WD81PURZ ( power consumption appears very close to each other )

Interesting. I have a 7200RPM and 5400RPM. I cannot see differences.

Let us know what WD says. Maybe also send them how you will be using to see if it changes their answer.

Newbie question - Is it okay to buy a used, mfg refurbed or seller refurbed WD Purple drive off of ebay or is it better to source a new one?
The mfg date on a used one is 2017 and the refurbed ones are 2018.
Thanks!

They are way down in price over what they were a year ago.
$100 for a 4tb is CHEAP.
Thanks looney2ns for the reality check. As a newbie I've only been looking the last few months so I don't have that price perspective.

White, red, purple....purple is all I see rated for or suggested here to use for surveillance. I don't know the technical differences though.
