Well to be precise, somewhere between 12-15ft. The expansion joint in the clip below is exactly 12ft.

(set youtube player to 1440 0r 2160 if it allows)
It's obvious that the IR, Iris, or shutter is not trying to adjust your presence in the image.

Ok, not to sound dumb, but I went to that link and I don't see any VF turret cams like this. Was it a bullet style that is?
There is a new 2mp starlight VF turret with better looking specs than the 5231ze, but I don't believe anyone here has their hands on one yet.

Thanks for the reply. I don't think I'd want to go with a camera that hasn't been tested yet as I don't have the time or patience to fiddle with it more than a tried and true one as I'm so new to IP cams. I'm thinking the 5231 might be the way to go for my situation. Out of curiosity and in your opinion since you've been doing this so long, is there any major advantage to the Pro AI line, it looks like there isn't a VF version in that line, but in general I'm curious. the 5231 seems to do what I would want it to as is. There's just a lot to take in on this site, kinda overwhelming at times.

Only issue with that is we're gaining low light capability at the expense of resolution. I guess it depends on it's intended purpose but fr me, low light high res has to be the way forwards and if that involves a slight trade for now, then so be it.

The 2MP Starlight models (like the 5231s) are great cameras. I'm not sure how many cameras you need for your system, but if you have the option of just getting one or two 5231s now, do that... spend a few weeks getting them setup and tuned and seeing how you like them. When you're ready for more cameras, come back and see how the Smart AI models are maturing. For me, the biggest advantage to the Smart AI models is that the 4MP models are the first megapixel jump where the low-light image quality equals (or beats) the 2MP 5231s. Folks have been waiting almost four years for that to happen!

.006 Lux = the "gold standard" 2MP 5231
.002 Lux = the new 2MP 3241
.001 Lux = the new 4MP 5442

Looks like the camera with the best minimum illumination spec is actually the one with the highest resolution?

I'm just happy they're making a new varifocal turret model, period. I was beginning to think they had given up on those. Hopefully the 4MP Starlight+ models will eventually get a varifocal turret too!

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m looking at 3 on the house right now. Probably do a couple on the garage in the spring so I could always move a 5231 there and if the 5442s mature by then get one. I am considering one of the 5431, I think that’s the model, the 2MP starlight with speaker in it for the front entry way instead of one of the 5321 but from what I see it still has the IR crush issue so maybe not. I do have a motion light right there so it could kick it into color mode. Who knows.

this one hasn't been reviewed yet, has it? (5442)
The 5442s have but the one that is, is a bullet style, I’d want the VF turret. We’re in the review thread now.

Updated for the Smart IR issue.
Just finished the testing the new firmware on the IPC-T5442TM-AS, the IR issue have some good improvement. Will test more outdoor later when dark.
Left one with the latest new firmware, and the right one is the old firmware.

Wow that seems like a pretty big difference. Can’t wait to hear about the others review

Not sure about the blue paint effect though. Does it have an artistic mode? Perhaps you can get a Picasso from it. :)

Well done, @looney2ns ! I too have installed the new fw, not tested in deep yet. By any chance, did you play with the IVS, Global Setup ? I'm not been able to correctly validate the calibration (yet, since is always reported the double of the actual length), have to play with it again.

IVS and AI is working as it should for me, very well in fact.
I have not messed with the Global setup, as I'm not sure how it plays into all of it or how it should be setup.

That’s great to her that the Smart IR has been fixed. Now we just need a VF of this camera.
