@Laserray Those 3 pics don't look like you can see the LP very well? Have you optimised the image further?

Well this month will be the 1st report sent to the city. I picked out 10-12 speeders one had 22 hits, basically twice a day. System had been up and down all month long. LPR works good some days, other days not so good.
We had a Dodge Changer hit 84mph in the dark with fog, road was wet.
I use the Freedom of Information Act to get a record of the people who were charge with speeding. The police chief claimed in our local paper they arrest 100 per month. The facts show this month it was two. So it's an up hill battle to get the police to do their job. And the news reporters are worthless., it was too hard for them to verify the facts :(
One interesting piece of data, when I send memo's to city hall the speeds drop. Every single time.
We have 4 cameras setup Loryta IPC-HFW5241E-Z12E IP 2MP Starlight Cameras and one IPC-HFW5231E-Z12E. 2 LPR 2 wide view. Now I need a side view camera to catch the vehicle side view.
offer Free coffee and donuts. would be cheaper, no? lol .
I know around here the small communities get together and they all stick signs on there front lawns that say something like "Respect the speed limit and drive as if your kids lived here".

LOL of course you are correct. And I just may do that :)
The neighbors play "Speeding or Not?". The kids gets to guess, and the adults get to take a shot. It's a pretty fun game, and shows how little one knows.

This has being a 2 year experiment. I was in total shock of the actual speeds I first recorded with the sports radar. Now it's all hard data stored away.
As far as cost, some people buy booze, and hot cars. The future legal costs are going to be huge. If you know an attorney who wants make some coin, send them to me.

I know people are trying to figure an angle, or even whats my angle. Rumors abound in my little city growing fast.
It's hard to believe somebody would do all that work just to improve something like a small neighborhood.. Oh well.

To the 90% who respect the speed limit, THANK YOU!

The reason I asked for the tech part of it. 1. I wanted to know what it looked like, and what made it tick. 2. I was thinking if this works well for you and has worked, maybe this could be turned into a portable mobile radar trailer a city could buy. They can deploy the device for a week, and see when they need to have officers out there running radar giving real tickets or b. start sending letters like red light tickets but only warnings.

On the tech post, would you mind sharing some of the pricing for some of the parts you bought?
Also, great idea for using the pelican boxes. There is a local vendor here selling a bunch for "cheap". it's cheaper than buying a new project box just never thought of it.

ok I put pricing up for you. The boxes were half the cost of pelican boxes. The connectors are water resistant and have worked well.

They already have those speed boxes. Yes, I was thinking the same but there is a lot more work to do. Solar power, battery back up, and remote internet.
Right now I just want to make good charts graphs and reports. The people who continue to be recklessly driving and trying to prove a point are going to prove my point in court.
The monthly reports are almost automatic, saving hours of research. One click and I can see a repeated speeder's pattern. You might try it on my website. Click on the guy with 39 speeding hits. You could catch him with very little effort.

The problem with my city's current speed boxes are:
They get damaged
They never leave them in one place to get any long term data.
They don't know who is doing the repeated high rate speeding.
They encourage speeding as people intentionally speed up and race the sign.
The data isn't organize well to do anything.

It's just lip service to the citizens who complain weekly about the out of control speeding in town.
The solution is obvious but you can't force the horse to drink the water.
There are just a small set of people that need to be pulled over and asked "why are going so fast? What do you hope to gain?"

It called taxes, and I don't pay them to speed without their lights. It was a nice test though. 3 cars, the one speeding was in the middle and the system got it right.
It just another example of childish bullshit that goes on everywhere. Adults acting like children.

@Laserray - I'm one county over (Fentress) and head to Algood Walmart every now and again (but not until they repair Cub Mountain SR85 washout)... I read all four pages of this thread and completely sympathize with your situation. I relocated to middle-TN two years ago after living the last 30 in Florida (Tampa). I lived in a master-planned gated community with 25MPH speed limits - and still people did well over 40. It is terribly frustrating, disrespectful, and dangerous. I commend you on your efforts, and will follow this thread with great interest.

BTW, the lack of accountability which results from the blue wall of silence is universal, and plays a part in why I chose to move as far from urban areas as possible. My closest neighbor is now over a mile away. My road sees one car per day (USPS), sometimes two (UPS/FedEx). I love rural TN!

I find it strange that some members would love to publish the faces of people on the internet without their consent.

I'm happy to not live under china-style total surveillance. We as people who utilize surveillance technology on our own premises should be very aware of the balance between permament privacy loss vs. seldomly having a photo of an intruder.

For me, "adding another camera to my system" must have a significant security reason and not just because it's my chosen freetime activity.

I would agree with you. However you need a job to travel to, and as you get older medical care. TN has the best medical care if you have great insurance, and leave close to a decent hospital.

As far as accountability somebody is forgetting repeated recordings over time will buying them. The one thing I have told the Chief every police officer has been very respectful. Prior to the setup they NEVER sped around Algood.
I'm going to post my latest interesting results further down.

Take Care Neighbor!

Well some time has passed and and interesting thing happened over the holidays that I can't explain. The speeding rates have fallen measurably. Certain days they drift back to 10%, but we had 2-3 this week at %3. I started after a messy Thanksgiving, and people doing 50-60 mph. A week later the rates started dropping. Not sure if it's my setup, but I checked everything. I'm going to replace the radar box, with another enhanced box anyhow.

So I keep telling my frustrated self, as these vehicles speed by randomly at 60+mph:
Is the glass 90% full or 10% empty? The rates are nowhere close to the elevates rates they used to be. The absolute best part is they are maintaining for not weeks but months.

That being said the website access has grown, so somebody is paying attention. We also get people "testing" the system. They drive up, and down with bikes, trucks, golf carts, etc

Interesting during these trying times with little traffic. The speeding has jumped to 15% during certain hours. Traffic is clearly speeding to Walmart which is empty of all staples. People are continue to hoard without anyone stopping them. The big bible belt says "F*&^ your neighbor. The governor has been very silent.
The worst part is they speed to a stop light that will hold you up 90% of the time because the cross traffic has priority. They speed to a store empty of bread, meat, frozen goods, and paper products.
This has been an enlightening social experiment.

Please keep this thread going, Laserray, this is nothing less than inspirational.

I don't see any connection to a "Big Brother" state spying on the people, and one of the people posting pictures taken on a public roadway. In fact, it seems to me that preventing a private citizen from doing what you are doing would be more Police State. There is tremendous difference between the government watching us and us watching the government (or us watching one another).

Keep up the good work, and keep us in the loop!

Personal experience on a 2 lane road with a 30 mph speed limit. double solid yellow the entire length of the road (~6 miles), 2 elementary schools, 1 middle school, 3 churches, 5 day cares only one side of the road has a sidewalk and there are children walking to and from school and all kinds of people just walking or running throughout the day. I have been passed on the left side more times than I can remember and I have even been passed twice by someone deciding to drive on the sidewalk. I actually took the annual police statistics of tickets issued, accidents, etc on the road and went to the city council and asked them what they were going to do about protecting the public on a proposed cut through for the Walmart since their own research they paid for said we would have increased traffic flow. They decided to not allow the proposed road to be built. WE would always take water and Gatorade out to the deputies while they would sit out front of our house.

I understand the battle you have and hope that no one gets hurt. I do wish you had more law enforcement so that they could handle it better though. One time when I was getting passed on the left hand side and a school bus was coming the opposite way, a deputy happened to be behind the school bus and pulled the jerk over.

I could write a book on what I have learned but YOU hit the nail on the head. Right on the mark. Thank you.
Guess who 10-5% of the speeder use to be? Government vehicles, "connected people".
1-2% lead foot women drivers.
3% rich mother fuckers.
Kids, and redneck truckers seem to very few now.
We track 100% now, and I keep my studies private.

It occur to me, after listening to my algorithm talk to me, why we are having a 3x speeding increase.
These are "out of towners" in search of food. I am NOT kidding. Algood Walmart is basically empty. They haven't restocked in at least a week.
I mean holy shit what are we becoming?? Oh ya, surprise they are being disingenuous to the lower class.

I'm taking the very long view. This for people like you.

You have to hit them where it hurts. Go after their money. I mean law enforcement. They don't co-operate finds ways to delete their income. (long term)
Have lots of money, and be willing to spread around.
Just how many "Walmart cut through the neighbor issues" you think we have around the country?????
Because the people who travel through my "Right of Way" think they have a right to break the law on my property. The police think taking a blind eye is ok because tickets are too much work.
They are both wrong.

I'm getting close to retiring, and getting involve in local government seems to be the right thing to do. I did the council meeting and learn what I needed. I didn't go to bitch. I want to know why my "rich" neighbors the HOA get more attention. My city manager point this out while denying it. I listen well ;)
I got my answer, and good for them. They watch over the city council, and have representation o the council. Thats how it should work.

Unfortunately I have some health issues crop up, and my business needs attention. Today I called all my employees together and told them they will be paid for the next two months no matter what.
oh ya, I saved for days like these.

You shouldn't give up the fight! God Bless You

A big warning to the people out there thinking of do something similar. I got to talk to a local officer. He suggested to bring up neighbors speeding directly to the neighbor and not waste his time. DO NOT DO THIS. ABSOLUTELY NOT. It never goes well.

We had a big increase in speeder percentage because scofflaws are scofflaws. He in the bible belt we have a right to spread disease. Our town didn't have enough protective masks and refused my donation. Our police and EMT's where left unprotected.
The governor spent 8 million on crappy cloth masks that end up having an irritant on them. Embarrassing to say the least. We have restaurants fully packed and no social distancing. No masks because that's "political"
Best yet NO Enforcement, NONE! The governor, the DA, and the health department, no one is responsible.
Whoever said "Boss Hog" Nailed it.

If you live in Algood we are donating YN95 to risk people!

Turned off the speed sign for 4 weeks, as predicted the speeding rose back to pre-sign levels.
Next tactic will be ads in our local paper.
