Same here in NJ. We've seen no pork and very sparse selection of chicken as examples. Beef may be available but the prices are astronomical. Better cuts in a good butcher store are over $30/pound. Even good, low fat, ground beef is getting close to $10/lb.
Thats insane.

About 5 or so years agowe were selling our beef for $1.50 a pound hanging (roughly 800 pounds.). Processing was around $0.50 a pound if I remember correctly. So for $2 a pound you could eat burger, T-bone, Ribeye, tenderloin etc.

Our cows are getting butchered late summer, I’m watching prices and a lot of guys like me are getting $3 a pound for beef, and processing is up around $0.60 a pound now. Still cheaper than stores.
But a lot of people get scared away from the upfront cost. If they buy a half a cow from us they are looking to hand over $1200 plus processing. Also they need the freezer space to store their meat.

Same with our pork and lamb. We’ll probably be in the ballpark of $2 a pound on our pigs. But that’s still substantially cheaper than going to the store.

I always encourage everyone to find a local farmer to buy meat from. Sure it can be a substantial upfront cost, but it is a huge way to save money throughout the year. Especially if you have the freezer space.

Reality is this as the world proceeds. Plant a Victory garden. Will it satisfy all your needs? Maybe not but it's a help. Learn to fish. Try hunting with safety of course. See what farmers are processing their own cattle, chickens, or hogs. TONS of ways to eat.

To many rely on the supermarket which is a good deal since Piggly Wiggly started them. BUT, we must rely on ourselves and those around us.

So it was in the past, so it will be going forward.

I'm ok
When hog prices tanked, we found a posting on facebook that was wanting to sell his pigs for $100 each,
ready to butcher. They were really happy to sell 2, and wanted us to take 50.
We picked them up and reopened the old garage butchering shop that normally opens during deer season. :p
We ended up with some of the leanest bacon, chops and sausage I have ever had! Great stuff.

A few weeks later, a neighbor had a cow that cut her leg so bad they had to put her down.
We ended up buying a new freezer and had all the meat we could stand. still eating on it.
Butchering 2 pigs was almost too much work for 4 of us, and a cow was way more.
Now I am thinking how I can make a cooler to hang our meat in. Would spread the work out.
Some how it never seemed that much work when I was a kid.

Where I am the city will not allow this. I had a friend that wanted to have chickens on his property 7 years ago and they will not allow this.

Also if you remember a few years ago, people were getting ticketed/fined for growing gardens on their own property. You'll see more of these popping up too.

And that’s a great reason to get out of the city.

I live in the country. I have a neighbor who lives next to me who is a total ass. When we started our farm he was literally knocking down the doors at our township hall to complain that I have livestock. They pretty much told him to get bent because he lives in the country and that there are livestock in the country.
Thankfully we live in a small community and word travels and I was made well aware of my neighbors distaste for me and for the fact that we have a farm here.

As our farm is expanding we are needing more pasture for our sheep and cows. So I decided I better pay the money and get my property surveyed before I put a pasture in so I am 100% sure I am not putting it on his property.

The dude lost his shit when he saw the survey stakes. He had a mental breakdown, ended up needing to be institutionalized for a few weeks. Once he got out of the nut house he was again knocking down the doors at the township office. They eventually told him that he doesn’t belong in the country and to leave and move to a condo.

I couldn’t live in a area that told me I couldn’t have livestock, and told me what way I had to wipe my ass after I took a shit.

We live in a rural area and it's zoned "farm" with a minimum lot size of one acre. There are houses, like ours on acre+ sized lots and some houses on multi acre lots. A number of those own horses, have corrals set up and some small pasture areas set up as well. Nobody cares, it's zoned for that and we knew that when we bought. We used to do a small/moderate garden as did my next door neighbor. Nobody cares other than they don't get the free tomatoes and cukes from the overage we had. Heck, I could convert the backyard into a mega garden and nobody would care.

Definitely food under threat .. posted this earlier in the Ukraine thread ..

Tzar Putin's plan .. using food, oil, natural gas .. nukes .. to take what Putin wants ... don't want to give Putin what he wants? He'll let the world starve ... or nuke them .. either way ..

St Petersburg International Economic forum the following was revealed by Margarita Simonyan ( Head of Russian Propaganda arm Russian Times .. )

"I've heard it several times from different people it goes like, "All our hope is in the famine."
Here is what it means:
It means that the famine will start now, and they will lift the sanctions. and be friends with us because they will realize it's necessary."
