My Dahua IPC-HDW5442TM-ASE just arrived today. It's supposed to be an S3 version. How can I actually tell if it's an S3 version? it doesn't say on the sticker on the bottom of the cam, it only says on the sticker on the wire S3 next to 2.8mm and in tiny print on the box across from the p/n. When you log into the camera, where it shows the model number, it doesn't even say S3 like Andy's cams do.

The serial number of the cam matches the serial number in the software and on the box and the manufacture date is 2024-04.

I did a firmware update using the latest firmware on dahua's website and it made no difference in showing an S3 next to the model number.

Also noticed that the cam runs warm after about half hour. I checked the temperature with a thermal imager and it's around 45c in a room temperature environment. Is this normal?Screenshot_20240826_170104_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20240826_170048_Gallery.jpg

When You log to camera ip using web browser:
  • old version have grey interface,
  • new S3 version have white/blue interface..
ps. 2024 cams are S3.. old version were produced to Q1-Q2 2023..

Yup, I see the new interface. But is it possible to run the new software on another version of the cam? Another thing I noticed was the cam was already initialized even though being factory sealed in a box, with its username and password on a sticker on the box.

Little strange..
normally cams are uninitialized and in that mode they don't have password...

there is risk that this is cam for Chinese market with hacked to English firmware.
You can try to firmware upgrade to latest one:

single-Riemann is correct one for S3 version..

Camera should accept this firmware and upgrade release date to 240616
if not, then for 99% is a Chinese version.

Dahua cams have no seal, no matter if oem or dahua branded to my knowledge

Looks like the seller tested the cam and put these stickers on, sealed the box. i have some cams from german distributor with seal, but these were put on by distributor later. they only accept return with non broken seal. But they dont test or initialize the cams.

Because its a security product seems reasonable.

You mean 20240516. Yes it updated to that from 20230802.

No the older cams cannot run the new GUI.

How much did you pay?

$185 CDN plus about $7 shipping.
Not to be a jerk, but you obviously know about Andy as you referenced him in this thread.

Why not buy from him and not have to worry about is it a China region hacked or anything else?

He sells it for $151.99USD and free shipping from his website. What is that $205CDN versus $192CDN

Hopefully all is good with that camera and it can be updated, etc. but for a few bucks more I would have gone with a known entity and not have all the questions you have now on if you got a legit camera. Your time is money after all.

At the time I purchased that one, I forgot about Andy's website. I was looking at his amazon ones which were a bit more expensive plus tax. I got another 2 more of those cams coming from the same aliexpress store that I applied a $40 aliexpress coupon to the order. I'm doing a setup for a friend so I'm trying to save as much money as possible.

I did buy four ZE versions of the cam from Andy.

In regards to the camera temperature, my other cams are just as warm, so like was said, I think that's fine.

I just got concerned when I didn't see the S3 in the software interface like I did with Andy's cams, as well as the sticker.

P.S, should the latest firmware be used for these cams? Is that the best version?

Another thing I forgot mention, does the S3 version come with the access panel for the sd card? I can't see it on any of the official pics but it's in the manual.

It is odd that it wouldn't have the S3, but unless someone has figured out how to hack it, the older chipset wouldn't be able to run the newer GUI efficiently, so as long as it doesn't seem sluggish, it should be ok.

Personally I wouldn't update the firmware just in case it is a Chinese region hacked model.

The S3 varifocals have the SD card door just like that and the previous ones, so I would assume that model would as well.

But is it possible that the Chinese region hacked firmware would allow the cam to be updated to the latest version? In the past, that wasn't really possible and was a good way to know if the cam was a fake. But if they've come this far and figured out how to do it, how much harder would it be to make some stickers with the S3 and make S3 show in the software interface.

If it is Chinese region hacked and you update it, it will either brick it or go into Chinese.

The cameras are hard-coded to region and the Chinese region will not accept the International version.

Some vendors will be upfront and tell consumers that as part of their store on AliExpress or other places, but many do not or the consumer forgets months after the purchase...here is one such example....

I had updated it and it worked out fine. I even asked the seller at purchase time if it was firmware upgradeable and he said yes.
