That is not quite true. New Orleans does not have any separate gun laws from the state. And Louisiana state gun laws are not much different than those in Texas. I have lived in both and know this to be true.

The police have no issue with using force, except when it would put them at risk. The police have no duty to protect, so they formed a perimeter and waited, a'la Columbine.
What happened was not a gun problem, the attacker could have been using a spear and we would have had the same result since the police, you know the guys who "protect and serve", provided him an HOUR of free time to do as he pleased.
Using this event as an excuse to ban firearms, rather than the point the finger at the real problem - the worse than worthless agents of the state - is to put us further at a disadvantage against an increasingly authoritarian government.
