4.4.9 - November 29, 2016

  • A bug has been corrected which resulted in a crash under specific web server conditions.

  • A secure web server session now survives a software restart within 60 seconds. Clients streaming via browser may resume without a re-login.

  • The Options/Web server page now allows you to set a virtual folder. If set to something other than /, the web server will expect requests to be pre-pended with this value. This may be useful if you are forwarding requests from another server.

  • Video encoding/decoding components once again have been updated.

Installed it today and now, the second BI starts, it crashes. The cam image is still ok. First time an update does that here. Using it for 2-3 months.

Any tricks to put it back on track ?

Same thing happened to me. BI crashes as soon as I try to launch it. I tried shutting down and rebooting the server, didn't help. Any suggestions?
 
I tried deleting the content of my "C:\BlueIris\db" folder. Then BI recreated this...about two minutes...and it worked about 3 seconds after that. :( My camera feed was ok during this operation. Can I reinstall the previous version easily ?

This has been discussed over and over again. The alternative is a single patch once every 6 months to one year with little to no added features. That is how everyone else does it. So what would you prefer? You can achieve the same result by simply updating once a year...this gives you the options. If you simply wait for a release to be out for a while and keep an older install file on had you wont have any problems.
 
I know how tremendous it can be to program all of this. Come on @riceandbeans :)

No offense guys, I know everyone is doing their best here. I was far from using all solutions I could think of. I work in I.T., I know how it is. :)

It's not "mission critical" at all on my side.

I apologize, that was a little harsh on my part.

I appreciate the heck out of what Ken does and love the continuous improvement.

Coming from a development and operations background I understand all too well the struggle of Q/A and roll to prod. It's a pain in the arse. And that's exactly why I paid money to Ken and his business to take the arse-pain for me.

I think it would be a smart idea to break up the release groups into stable and beta groups. Breaking changes that require a manual downgrade may be fine for the consensual beta tester, but I rely quite heavily on the solution to be solid by the time it hits my servers.

disable auto update...problem solved.

The problem is on their website only the latest version is made available, whether it be a minor or major release. I think they should separate the major release from the minor releases, or something like beta or stable release. Essentially they should have two branches of code, one focuses on bug fixes and the other for new features plus bug fixes. So for those who wants stability over new untested features, they can choose the stable release. For the rest, they can choose the beta release.

Well it did the trick, but not for 24hr straight....SO...I uninstalled everything...just keeping the content of the video and photo files. Reinstalled the version I downloaded FROM THE WEB SITE at the end of september....Installed the latest update, recreated the camera (only one for now so no big deal)....and so far it's perfect ! :)

EDIT :

OOPS, I enabled recording...picture taking....and the crashes are back. I think it's time for the real tech support.... :) Don't know how I can disable this now.

EDIT 2:

Logged in my Dahua CAM, put the video mode back to H.264 and....Blue Iris starts ok !

its a one man operation and thats is why the software can be so cheap....compiling two levels of code and dealing with many beta testers is time consuming. If you think that there are no bugs in milestone, exacq etc then you are mistaken. Just look at their support forums.

just one example. Just because 5 or 10 or twenty users here have an issue with a particular release it doesnt mean it affects everyone..there are so many variables, its impossible to test for all.
 
4.4.9.1 is out and works for me. I'm ok with the software quirks, I learned to disable automatic updates long ago. But... the bugs of untested software could be mitigated simply by keeping recent older versions available. They used to be available online. But were removed. Most likely to force users to sign up for a support plan to get access to previous versions.

it has nothing to do with the support plan - it was removed many at least a year, before additional support was offered....any user can still get every single past update by simply downloading it from the website when they update.
 
That's a lot of work for a software that has gone through the trouble of creating a nice UI to allow you to check and install new updates from directly in the UI. If I had to manually remember to check the website and download and keep random versions of every software and app I use... my life would be very complicated. And the point is users don't know they need to do that in order to be able to safely update to the newer versions and features of BI. Simply making the last 10 or so updates available for download would solve this user problem.

There's really no reason or trouble in making past updates available. There is a lot of user experience pain caused by the current model and lack of past versions available online to rollback to.

You DONT have to manually check for updates...when you launch the software it does the check for you. Only an idiot keeps auto update on for ANY piece of software. Yes he could post the last 10..but its a minor hassle for the feature set...your blue iris pc should be a dedicated VMS pc...simply leave the downloads in your download folder...its easy and efficient.

Yes, because the current situation where a user has to check the Updates webpage every day to manually download every single update file is sooo much better than having a list of old updates available. This is not a minor hassle, it's a big hassle.

Then stop bitching and move to another vms...there are many...let us know how that goes for you. If you follow common sense you will be updating a few times a year...not every other week...its really no trouble AT ALL...it takes exactly 15 extra seconds. You should NOT be updating with every release.
