A Tale of Two Delivery Drivers...

It is amazing how different delivery drivers stage your package.

Yesterday I had one place it behind one of the pillars on the front porch and ring the doorbell. That is where most of the UPS packages end up.



Today a different guy placed it on the edge of the porch and did not ring the bell. The placement of the package is not only in full view of the street, but is calling out to be stolen. Even the amazon smile is pointed towards the street! Most drivers place them up against the door or in the corner by the door. While they could be seen from the street in those places, they are not very obvious.

Most delivery drivers guarantee 2 things:

1. That the package was delivered; and
2. That it will get stolen when in plain site.

I have a gate on my drive, and usually they will reach through and put the package on my side of the gate,
although once in a while, they will squeeze through the gate, and "hide" it among the trash cans.
Then you have FexEx, they like to drop it over the other end of the gate, so they think they will not
be on camera when they drop it from 5 foot high. If they would look up, there is a camera on the
corner of the garage that overlooks the whole gate very well.
Over all 90% of reviewing my blue iris files, is to find where my packages are!
At least it keeps me in practice.

Amazon has a way to rate your delivery, so you can leave feedback by clinking some of their feedback links.
I use it quite a bit. Figure it makes good drivers stay around, and bad drivers go away.

That's right. I have been getting an email saying that the package was delivered and rate the driver. I always do the rating.

However, this time I did not get that email. Strange.

I've not had USPS, UPS nor Fedex ring the door bell in over two years. And most of them will place the package at the front edge of the porch.
I think it is in part due to the time tracking that the reader they carry, does via GPS. They get rated on how efficient they are, by the time spent at each drop.
My UPS drivers run from the truck to the porch, and run back to the truck.

Wow, not here in TX. Maybe its the 90F+ temps. Now don't get me wrong, they don't crawl either. But usually not running. It is only lately that they have been ringing the door bell. Not sure why and not every one of them.

I have had the same UPS driver for over 10 years. I have had the same USPS driver for over 20 years. They both know all my dogs names. They open the front gate place the package on the covered front porch, ring the bell. I do not think I have had the same Amazon person twice in a row. They drop the package over the gate, rain or shine. The amazon drives are careful around three barking dogs.

UPS and USPS drivers get nice tips at christmas and cold drinks in the Texas summer.

I have a family member that has been with UPS for over 15 years. New union contracts put their salary upwards of 70 thousand, the 18 wheeler drivers 100 thousand. They work 9am to 9pm unless they finish earlier. They are encouraged to finish earlier, the trucks have gps trackers and their scanners have time limits and tracking as well. He says they usually ring the doorbell unless there is a note asking them not to do it. They are also instructed to place packages out of site of passing vehicles.

Do the UPS drivers have a GPS system that gives them the route to follow for optimum delivery? I often sit on my front porch and see the UPS, FedEx, etc trucks go back and forth. I also have a cam dedicated to counting cars that go by the T-intersection on my corner. The same UPS truck goes back and forth up and down the street, taking the corner and then coming back, etc. I would think that since the company scans every package that gets loaded to the truck and it knows the address, that it would be trivial to have a list of addresses in a route order for them to follow. Hell, the trash trucks do a route. Why not the UPS truck?

I asked him that same question. Their hand held scanner has the route already laid out for them. I said you mean it will have you pass up a location that you could potentially drop off a package and come back to it later. He said yep. It's called logistics, and the computer says this is the most efficient way to deliver over 200 stops. He said he doesn't mind because he makes overtime when he could have finished earlier. They are supposed to be done with all deliveries by 5 and then they have to start all the pickups from UPS stores and Apartment building offices if they have them on their route.

I'm jealous! Our USPS driver has been changed up a few times and when we started seeing a good UPS driver he disappeared. Now it seems to be a different person every time. Amazon drivers rarely follow my delivery notes, let alone hide it or ring the bell. I've had them come partway up the driveway and turn around and leave without dropping the package because they heard a dog bark somewhere. My dogs are either fenced in back or secured in the house with the door closed. I watched an Amazon driver run away with my package once. Tracking showed a failed attempt. Called and was transferred to the logistics supervisor who called the driver. He told her he heard a shotgun blast and wasn't risking his life. I have audio on my camera and it heard nothing during the time he was here.

My experiences (from best to worst):

1. UPS -- Same driver, rings the door bell most times, will place packages against the front door (but exposed);
2. FedEx -- Different drivers, never rings the door bell, places packages out in the open on the edge of the steps for all to see;
3. USPS -- Same carrier, never rings the door bell, packages too big for mailbox placed against the front door (but exposed);
4. Amazon -- Different drivers, never rings the door bell, will toss packages even those marked fragile (wherever it lands is where it stays).

Note1: I used to have a UPS driver who hid my packages behind the shrubbery. I like that, but they don't do that anymore.
Note2: USPS is #3 because it's a crap shoot as to whether the carrier remembers to deliver the package.

I have had the same UPS and USPS person for quite some time now and I have got to know them. They treat me well and will ring the door bell. Amazon has different drivers all the time and anything can happen. DHL and FedEx are average.

I have had the same UPS driver for 7 years and he is great. Amazon, different driver everytime and sometimes it's people driving there own car no amazon label or anything and dropping packages off. SMH
USPS same person for 9 years.

UPS has been great!
USPS is good if it is the normal gal, otherwise, pot luck.
Amazon is usually good, but they have terrible times of revolving drivers.
DHL is worthless around here. I have had them refuse to deliver here, say they can't find my address. So I have to drive over 50 miles to pick up my packages.

UPS and DHL are pretty good here. Most of the time they put the package inside the driveway gate, about 120 feet from the street or I'll meet them if I see them coming on a camera. They also, usually, ring the doorbell at the driveway gate.

USPS is a mixed bag. None of them seem to be able to use reverse very well, backing up on the lawn or stopping short and digging holes in the gravel. Packages get left on the front steps, no matter what the weather. They rarely ring the door bell

Amazon has improved, especially since they stopped using Laser Ship. They, too, leave the packages on the font steps no matter what the weather may be. They never ring the door bell.

As far as DHL is concerned, the only time I have had deliveries from them is when I buy cams from Andy (@EMPIRETECANDY ). So I have had 9 deliveries of cams since Aug 2018 and each time it has been the same lady. Of course she rings the bell since there is a signature required.
