An LPR success story

Sometimes having an LPR system definitely pays off. Here's my latest story:

On June 14, I recorded a couple of catalytic converter thieves hitting my neighbor's Prius parked right across the street from me in the early hours of the morning. I uploaded my video to YouTube, posted it on NextDoor, and forwarded everything to the local police. I then entered the license plate into my LPR alert list, just in case they came back. I heard nothing from the police or my neighbor after that. Given that it was an out-of-state plate, I thought perhaps the thieves had moved on.

Flash forward to last Monday night (10 weeks later), when out of the blue I suddenly got an LPR alert at 9:30 p.m. A vehicle with the same plate was back in my neighborhood. A quick check of my cameras confirmed that it was the same 2001 Chevy Suburban that I had recorded before. I knew what was going to happen, because my cameras had recorded it the previous time. The thieves would cruise around the area looking for vehicles to target, then return in the early hours to steal their catalytic converters.

I made a call to the police, and within 15 minutes an officer showed up who was doing the night shift in my neighborhood. He looked at my video, agreed that the thieves would probably be back in a few hours, then started cruising around the streets near my home to look for likely targets, i.e. Toyota Priuses parked on the streets. I also put the officer's phone number into my alert list so that he would get notified if the thieves drove by my house again.

Around 2 a.m., I was awakened by the same officer at my door. His partner had the thieves in custody several blocks over, and he needed to see my video again to confirm that the two guys they had caught were the same ones in the June video (there was some question about the identity of one of them). Satisfied, he radioed his partner to take both into custody. In the back of the Chevy Suburban was a catalytic converter that they had stolen from my same neighbor across the street. Her Prius was parked in back, but they went through the alley behind her house and stole it about 30 minutes before they were arrested.

As it turned out, the two of them are from Louisville, KY. They would drive down to Nashville, steal several converters, then head back to Louisville. If they found a Prius parked in front of a home, they made a note of the address, and would come back weeks later to steal the replacement converter (having assumed that the owner would have replaced it by then).

Both are currently in jail for burglary and felony vandalism. One of them faces additional charges as a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. And right now I'm pretty much blowing up Nextdoor with the follow-up message I posted about the arrest, and getting my 15 minutes of fame. ;)

Great work!
What LPR software alerts you to the repeat visit?
I just use my LPR cam in a parking lot, and try to review overnight acitivty daily.
But if they are doing recon, and then returning, ( i had one like that) It would be beneficial to get alerts.
But I'm getting to the point with the Condo that I don't want any of their headaches anymore.
I might make a move in the next 2 months ( maybe)

Rekor Scout (i.e. OpenALPR). I had completely forgotten about the alert until my phone went off on Monday night.

This is a great story, made my day!!

It is a great marketing story for @EMPIRETECANDY (well except for the Wyze camera lol), but it is clear which cameras did the heavy duty work!

Even if your cameras are isolated from the internet, I would recommend you pull the barcode sticker off of them!

Too bad you couldn't put a dig in about the new TN plates LOL.

Does anyone remember if we had any previous members that made the news with a story like this?

The thing is, lots of people on IPCT have used their cameras to solve some serious crimes. But for some reason this story is resonating with the public because so many folks are mad as hell about catalytic converter theft.

By the way, it appears these two perps were actually recording the addresses of their previous victims, then returning to the same houses weeks later to hit the same cars again. They had practically made a job out of it. They were back in my neighborhood to hit some of the same vehicles they hit in June. They stole my neighbor's catalytic converter for a second time by driving through the alley behind her house. The police officer I spoke to was convinced that was deliberate; they knew a Prius was somewhere on that property.

Unfortunately for them, the police caught them 30 minutes after that, and my neighbor's alley cameras recorded them committing the crime. But my neighbor is still another $500 out of pocket to cover the deductible for the 2nd theft in 10 weeks.

Yeah, we have been fortunate that many members here have been able to solve crimes with our cameras, including mine.

You just never know what the media may pick up on. @Flintstone61 has seen a lot of converters stolen at work and a repeat offender breaking into the condo unit he works at, and you would think the media would have picked up on that story.

Let's hope they are able to throw the book at them and keep them behind bars for a long time. It certainly sounds "pre-meditated" or whatever word an attorney would use for them scoping out and planning their route for this theft.

Please keep us posted as they make there way thru the legal system! Any word of bail amount or out yet?

They have a court hearing today. Bail was at $25,000 for one and $50,000 for the other (felon with a gun), but more charges may be tacked on.

I suspect that if these guys make bail, they'll be back over the border to Kentucky in an hour, never to return for their court dates. Hopefully they'll be held for other outstanding warrants.
