Hi all. I have an HP Pro desk and only one internal Bay for a hdd.

I've a WD purple for the stored folder of Blue Iris.

Has anybody used an external doc for an SATA HDD, connected to the pc via USB?

Hi @buckfast

USB - depending on the USB version it can be too slow, and in general I do not like most external USB enclosures for 24/7 operation.

I suggest opening up the case and seeing if you have 2 SATA connections and doing a DIY hack to swap the OS on a SATA SSD HDD and then add a WD purple to the 3.5" bay.

Quick look at this:

Looks like 2 SATA connections on the MB - one for the low profile optical drive, I would use that and use the optical drive bay for the OS SSD.

Thanks Mat. So windows into a USB, out with the old HDD and in with the SSD.
Out with the optical drive, and in with the WD purple? Do I have it right?

Hi @buckfast

Sounds about right

1) backup windows to a USB drive
2) buy SSD - check for a back up software from the OEM
3) disconnect optical drive
4) connect SSD - run back up software ( double check the instructions, as I am "winging" it )
5) I would then remove old HDD - swap SATA connection to SSD
6) install WD purple to old HDD location, connect SATA from optical to WD purple ( you may not have to do this.. just used to using SATA0 on the MB for the boot drive - more of a habit than a have to do this, ideally both SATA are high speed on the MB, you'll want to check the specs ) Mostly likely both SATA ports are equal in speed... again you'll need to check specs. Also you should be able to either to boot - set it up in the BIOS.

If you have a prodesk sff there should be room for two 3.5 drives as well as 2.5 ssd.
