Blue Iris 4 to 5 Migration Guide

Thanks for this @bp2008

I’m waiting an update cycle (or two EDIT: three, considering today’s posts :)) to install, but would be interested in reading the current help file in advance. Would you mind posting the v5 Help pdf that installed with Blue Iris 5?

Or perhaps @Mike could make a folder/location for it (and its future revisions) in the Downloads section?

@bp2008 anything special we need to know if BIT is installed?

Nope, BIT wont have any effect on this.

I'm getting hung up on entering the license key. It pauses for about 45 seconds then tell me it can't register online:

When I paste that string into my browser, I get this:

Is his server just overloaded, or am I missing a step?

I've had to do that process before, but never got a code of 0 out of it. Contact support if it continues doing that. It should give you a fairly long code to copy and paste into BI, not just a 0.

So...not sure if this is of use to people but I was having trouble with BI5 install. After the install it would launch and then never again (still running in task manager though). Luckily I had backed up the settings of BI4 (export).

I came a cross another forum that mentioned registry issues (http://www.blueirissoftware.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4636&sid=513cfc37948b0706cbf3aaa7cdcd5065&start=4 ).

Anyway I tried renaming the folder key from "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Perspective Software\Blue Iris Import" to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Perspective Software\Blue Iris"

So try this:

Export BI4 settings.
Uninstall BI4
Install BI5
Import settings. BI5 will probably not run again.
Kill the BI5 process is task manager.
Run regedit as Admin.
Change the folder key from "Blue Iris" to something like "Blue Iris BAK" ***
Rename "Blue Iris Import" (it's called something like that from memory) to "Blue Iris"
Restart BI5 and hoprfully you are up and running.

Go back to regedit and delete the BAK folder if you are happy it's all working.

*** You may have to change the permissions in regedit in order to rename the folder key:
Right click the "Perspective Software" folder key in regedit: (\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Perspective Software\).
Click "Users" in the list of user names.
Check 'Full Control" and the click on the advanced button.
Select "Users" from the list of names (should have the word FULL beside it) and check "replace all child object permission....".
Click OK
Now you should have rights to change the registry folder name.

Hope this works for people.

@atothek, Alerts are stored in Blue Iris's clip database. Make sure BI5 is pointing at the same folder for the database as BI4 was. If it is, and the alerts are still gone, then I'm afraid there is no getting them back unless you made a backup of the clip DB.

I upgraded to v5 today.

After install I was able to open 5, everything appeared to be running fine. I could also open v4.

I then uninstalled v4 as advised, this is when nothing has worked since.

I could no longer open v5, i got it to open once and it told me it was unlicensed and it then crashed. The only way of getting it to open following this was a full delete of registry keys.

This would be ok, but as soon as you go to import the backup (of which i have 4 different copies from different dates) the software closes to never open again.

I then have to delete registry keys, plus the blue iris import registry keys to get it to open again (with of course no settings)

Anyone had this and resolved it before i begin setting it all up again from scratch.

EDIT: I solved getting it to open with my settings, via deleting the Blue Iris registry folder, and changing the Blue Iris Import folder to Blue Iris... this appears to have used all my previous settings ok, its just my license thats lost but I'm sure ill get a copy through support/my records.

License in and working, web server wasn't but the previous advice to download a fresh copy and overwrite worked perfectly, I did have to create a new firewall rule also before it would work too so remember to check this.

Thank you @MartyM
My blue iris 5 is now fully fonctionnal with the camera settings and planning settings.
Your tips solve my problem, Blue Iris was not starting after backing up and reapplying the settings.

Here's an odd event I found this morning. All of my camera's clips stopped recording at 2:00 AM sharp, and returned to recording at 2:04:10 AM. The log files shows normal entries during this blackout. EDIT: Checking the old clips, and the same behavior was happening in Version 4.

My experience of 4 > 5... I'm literally working my way through this as I type;

Installed 5
Rebooted
Ran 5
As prompted uninstalled 4
Rebooted
Ran 5 (observed my BI Service had been removed)
Copied legacy "Clips, Archivin & Database folders from %ProgramFiles%\Blue Iris 4\ to %ProgramFiles%\Blue Iris 5\
Updated reference in BI
Clicked OK
Went back to settings
Changed Web Server location from %ProgramFiles%\Blue Iris 4\www to %ProgramFiles%\Blue Iris 5\www
Clicked OK
Under Startup, clicked Run As Service
Rebooted
Under Cameras, changed "Hardware accelerated decode (Restart)" from NO to Intel+VPP
Profiles Tab -- all Profiles lost :(
Schedule Tab -- all schedules lost :(
Schedule Tab -- Lat/Long was reset :(
- Updated Lat/Long
- Created Day/Night Profiles
- Created Day/Night Schedule
Rebooted

- Tested Phone App - working
- Tested WebUI - not working, receiver error on connection;

An unexpected error has occurred in Blue Iris Logon (v 19 / 5.0.0.42). If you wish to report the error, please SCREENSHOT the browser now.

Uncaught ReferenceError: $ is not defined at https://censored_hostname/login.htm [149:3]

Renamed %ProgramFiles%\Blue Iris 5\www to www_old
Downloaded latest UI3 from bp2008/ui3
Unzipped UI3 into a new \www\ folder -- UI3 now working

Moving onto Camera config, all cameras seem to have lost Motion Algorithm settings (now showing Simple instead of Gaussian), and High Defention check box ACROSS ALL PROFILES. This has broken my Zone Config.
Equally, all additional profiles now "Sync with Profile 1" so all differential settings are lost (for example, my Motion settings at night, differed to in the day -- GONE -- FOR EACH CAM!)
More annoyingly, regarding Motion Profiles, I can no longer (seemingly) copy one profile to another, so for those cameras whereby ONLY my sensitivity changed between Day/Night, I have to recreate the Zones.

This is turning into a bit of a chore to be honest!

edit! More aanoyingly, trying to "fix" my Motion config, by changing Simple algorithm to Gaussian, and enabling High Definiton, resets each time I go back in to camera properties. As such I am unable to configure my Zones.

I upgraded from v4 to v5 and it seemed like everything went well.. but.... I purchased extended support and received license code and when I enter it I get a message telling me I need to use my v4 license key. So I found that in my emails and entered it but it tells me that it is a v4 key and I need to buy extended support. I think the issue is I have two email addresses and when I purchases the extended support license I used Paypal which is linked to the email address that Blue Iris v4 wasn't registered with. Any suggestions?

Try both keys in the Settings > About > Upgrade/Renew window. I don't think it's very clear where you enter extended support Key, and had similar issues, until I found the Update/Renew key entry box.

This may be unrelated to your issue, and may not work, but short of emailing directly for support, this is all I can think to try.

Thanks. After I read your post I went back in entered my v4 key and then pressed yes when it said i need to purchase extended support and then I entered my new support key. That worked.

Great! Not very clear is it :)

I upgraded from BI4 to BI5 Saturday afternoon, and really only had one problem, attempting to validate the registration key. It's been years since I originally purchased BI4 so I purchased BI5 outright. The server did email me a registration key, but it would not activate in BI5 and I used the URL to obtain the hex registration code. Biggest problem during this? BI would not allow me to switch back to the browser screen to copy information. I wound up using the browser window on my local system to copy information and the Remote Desktop window to paste the information. Minor difficulty, just thought I'd inform folks who may have the same issue.

Man, I wished I had seen this thread.

You would have saved me major work.

I ran into it’s starts once, never again, can’t delete two registry entries etc. etc. etc.

My nephew asked my wife about recommendations on security cameras and software since his daughter’s bike got stolen, I told him to go to Costco buy coax cameras and a recorder bundled.

I am a retired Systems Engineer 30 plus years, and I find this a major job. When you start needing a dedicated IT staff support at home to run this, . well. That and fighting Windows 10, man, I miss Linux and that’s saying something.

The only way I got 4 to work was a restore, repeated, 5 times, this is before reading this thread.

I once got Blue Iris 5 working, somehow, but when I imported a backup of Blue Iris 4, Blue Iris 5 shutdown, never to restart.

Oh, I once got 5 working, damn thing told me to uninstall 4, I uninstalled fully , register entires and all, I just assumed 5 would have its own, silly me.

But I digress.....

Has anyone tried changing under “Sensor Motion” the Black and White, Cancel shadows, High definition setting?

While I had 5 briefly running I found if I checked off the settings they didn’t stick after clicking OK. It’s the reason I tried reloading a backup copy of 4 and 5 then disappeared never restarting nor could I restart the UI.

I’m waiting a month before even considering installing 5.

Why doesn’t this company allow some volunteers to pre test this finished product before releasing it to the public?

And a company Readme outside of an install with some of this information.

If I seem cranky you would be to if you stayed up into 4 AM screwing with this because the same computer runs Emby and I get the wife’s wrath, et al. when that TV service is down during the day.

Especially when I thought this would take about 15 minutes, that’s what I told the users, then my phone lit up.....thinking about my working days.

Many thanks for posting this.
