So I can buy a modem which works with my UK ISP.

It's only £15/$20... so if I get that how will that help me?

I'm also going to post separately to see if there is anyone from the UK around on the forum who has managed to get around UK specific challenges

If you have a separate modem from your router. You then can get a router the supports openVPN. This will allow you to secure the remote access to your network. recommend an Asus rt-ac68u.

Always keep it simple.
