Dahua Starlight Varifocal Bullet Z5 7-35mm (IPC-HFW5231E-Z5)

1) you can use a separate IR light and turn off the IR on the camera

Yep. This is what I plan on doing when I ever get around to it.

Here's a side by side comparison of the zoom of the Z5 vs Z12. Both at full zoom.

Hello Kev,
Which is the Z5 and which is Z12? I assume Z5 is the left picture? Why does it look better than Z12?

Yes, but it is much better zoom, covering more distance and also more in close like the Z. Use the FOV range to get a good feel for the real zoom. The Z5 sort of leaves a bit to be desired at the wide angle end in my pinion for good universal use.

97°~34°(Z)
35°~12°(Z5)
59°~5°(Z12)

2.7~12mm/F1.4, Motorized (Z)
7~35mm/F1.4, Motorized(Z5)
5.3~64mm/F1.4, Motorized(Z12)

In that case for the small price difference the Z12 makes more sense. This will be facing down a long driveway so the better zoom will help anyways. Low light performance looks very good on these cameras from what I have read, will need it though because this will be in an interior lot with basically no outside light.

My planned mounting location for an LPR use camera is literally behind my mailbox, about 2 ft of fthe ground, looking down the road in front of my house which provides about a 200' distance straight distance to see cars coming and going.
So my range for picking up a plate could technically be anywhere from 1' to about 200'.
I know having a more powerful IR seems to be optimal for being able to use shutter rates like 1/2000 - 1/5000. The Z5 says IR out to 50m and the z12 says IR out to 200m. I assume this would mean the Z12 IR is brighter \ more powerful. from reviewing the LPR thread, having a narrow FOV that would show only the front of the car and a little road is optimal. So the Z12 would allow for the narrowest FOV but looking \ focusing further down the road than necessary to focus possibly, correct?
Any thoughts on if a Z5 or Z12 would be better for this scenario?

I use both, the Z5 as a wider view of the area, and the Z12 for plates. In both of these videos, the Z5 is first, then the Z12 captures the plate:

Thanks.
So they appear to be rooftop mounted, yes? Are they both fully zoomed?
In my arrangement it would be mounted on the mailbox post looking down the road. So at that close proximity to vehicles passing maybe the Z5 could be zoomed in enough to only show the middle of the road and front of cars for better plate capture and I would not need the Z12 or maybe it would be overkill at that close range?

OK, I gotta know...how do you get the speed recorded and overlaid in the video?! That is great. What equipment does that especially from that range? Oh, and is radar equipment for this expensive or bulky?
I'd be interested in seeing a pic of the setup.

Roof top mounted: No - They are just below the gutters you see in the picture above. In the picture below, the Z12 is on the left, Z5 on the right.

The Z12 is fully zoomed, the Z5 is about 80%

The radar system is a little complicated. It involves about 5-6 different scripts on one computer to get the overlay, and an actual police radar.

Thanks
I'm guessing police radar units are not cheap but it is a cool setup.
The camera's IRs look pretty bright. Do they stand out that much to the eye or is it just in the photo?
I noticed the Z5 rating is 50m and the Z12 is 200m. Is the Z12 IR substantially bri b term to do that?

It was about $100 on ebay.

It's hard to tell about the IR with them being side by side.

It really shows in this picture though:

nice setup. @Go3Team , i only see one camera (on our left), ad two IR blasters, unless i am misreading the image objects.

Great job! Thanks for making a comparing for these two models, i have a question, for the Z5 and Z12 which one is better for the LPR?

The Z12. I get paid Wednesday, I may be buying another one from you.
maybe buy the IPC-HFW5231E-Z12E, will get some stock very soon seems, the Z12 one no stock now.

I thought the price of electronics always come down over time but the Z5 is now $17 more than when reviewed in the original post,
($207 vs $190 in March)? Why?

Only a guess: In March a dollar exchanged to about 6.9 chinese yuan. Now a dollar exchanges to about 6.5 chinese yuan, a ~5.8% devaluation. $190 increased by 5.8% is $201.02. This would account for more than half of the increase.
