Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

My 5231 has been shipped. Ordered 12/26/16. So glad its going to make it before the Chinese new year. Very happy @EMPIRETECANDY your hard work is appreciated.

on a side note my turret shipped yesterday and I just got a call that it may require a signature, it's in ohio and should be here tomorrow. If i love it I will try to order maybe 3 more before chinese new year, even if I don't get them until after, I just couldn't bring myself to order more than one camera without testing it out for myself first. Even though nayr's pictures and video examples were great.
Been there with another camera. The poster's pics were really good, my result was very poor along with constant "No Signal". fenderman set me straight on future purchases.. wait to see what everyone says BEFORE purchasing.

yeah, nayr seems like a pretty sharp guy who knows his stuff so i trust his reviews enough to buy the camera, but I won't buy bulk until I test myself and see with my own eyes lol. I'm so glad I came back to this place before getting new cameras, it used to be HORRENDOUSLY expensive to get a MOTORIZED varifocal, I still feel like security cameras are way behind and way overpriced for what you get but lol what are you going to do.

I thought the vulnerabilities were patched???

Is it the surveillance station or the synology in general>

If you know anything about IT, patching a vulnerability doesn't last long before they find another one, if your software is a big target it will be getting pounded on all the time. It's all up to you I mean if all of your cameras are outside the house and they run on a dedicated machine maybe you don't care much what weirdo gets in and creeps on your cameras, I know with synology they were getting in and encrypting the drives for ransom though lol. Hell, leaving anything open to the internet guarantees hackers will be poking at it all day and night, it's only a matter of time. I don't even allow remote access to my firewall unless I am on VPN. I got tired of watching bastards from china trying to brute force it all day.

Agreed. He mentioned in another post how trying to focus on a ladder with a laptop in hand is a joke and not fun. The motorized function will be an endearing feature I will be happy to have.

I'm pretty sure if that were a thing they would have stopped making turrets and dome cameras many years ago lol. if you're camera gets that hot you may have other issues, I sure wouldn't mount any camera directly in the sun if I could help it. though it would probably be fine unless you live in death valley.

Well there's nothing wrong exposing the camera in the sun as long as it's not aimed directly at it. Ever wonder why they colored them white? lol

Death Valley!!! That's it!!! It's called heat transference! This is how it dissipates heat from the inside lol -- through its metal/steel body -- I think my senility got the best of me lol.

Thanks, bud. :)

Exactly same tracking info here but didn't get any call. May require signature or probably import tax?

Trying to adjust a manual varifocal camera sucks period, I'm dumping mine as soon as I replace them

with as many pages as you've added to this thread you better provide some pictures/data to back me up once you've drawn your own conclusions :P

y'all dont have to take my word for it much longer, there's now enough of these cameras on this forum if there's gonna be any problems/issues we'll find out soon enough.. I went through every test I could think of; if anyone's gona be surprised by anything its going to be how much they underestimated what they could accomplish in low light for under $200 heh.

My first 2 megapixel camera was manual varifocal and man is that ever true. Focusing it sucked, and to make things worse it required a different focus setting to be sharp under IR versus visible light.

I'm going to do a shootout with one of my 3mp hikvision varifocal cameras so pictures and or video will be provided, I'm not as much of a camera geek but I am a computer geek. I was going to ask you if you had any good resource for learning about all the little settings in the cameras, I think I have a pretty good grasp but I love learning about stuff on a technical level.

once your a camera geek all the settings make perfect sense heh.. I learned all this stuff back in highschool, I took 4 years of Photography and was developing my own film and making prints in a chemical dark room that we had.. I'd bet that room is now storage and all the kids have digital cameras and a printer with no idea whats going on inside.

Get your self a nice camera and spend your next several vacations enjoying it through a viewfinder heh, using iphones or cameras on 'auto' wont teach you anything about photography.. Playing with all the settings is how you learn what they do; its how I taught my self how to operate a computer over 20 years ago ;)

Yup, but it's better than fixed focal length, I just didn't end up getting very many because they were so expensive but now modern features are finally making down into the cheaper cameras.

Same here, I don't know how many times I broke Windows and had to reinstall.

As I understand, this camera is auto varifocal, right? Just zoom in/out to your preference then it auto-focuses and your done then install, am I correct?

Never tackled a varifocal before so forgive me for asking.

I would not have bought one of it were manual, getting an auto focus camera with great low light vision for under $200 is why I ordered one.
