Here's how to read Hikvision serial numbers

IPCT Contributor
There is confusion in forums regarding serial numbers and region codes. Here is now you read HIK serial numbers:

Example for a DVR: DS-7608NI-E2/8P0820160211AAWR123456789WCVU
(IP camera serials are similar)

DS-7608NI-E2/8P <- model name
08 <- input channels
20160211 <- production date YYYYMMDD
A <- CPU freq (A, B, or C)
A <- DSP freq (A, B, or C)
WR <- Region code, see below
123456789 <- serial number
WCVU <- features, see below

Region codes:
CH <- China
TW <- Taiwan
JP <- Japan
EU <- Europe
WR <- World/multilanguage
RR <- Other/unspecified

Feature codes:
W <- Supports web
C <- Supports VT
V <- Supports VGA
L <- Supports LCD
U <- Supports USB

The region code controls features, not UI language. There is a separate code for language in bootparams (not in the serial #):

01 <- EN/Multi-language
02 <- Chinese, simplified
03 <- Chinese, traditional

Useful info, many thanks.
These are the same Region codes as in the NVR serial numbers - created on the fly from the model code. As with most of the other attributes.
The numbers on the box are not in this type of format. they are:
Model: DS-2CD2142FWD-IS 2.8mm
4MP/ 1/3"CMOS / 20(P)/20(N)fps @ 2688x1520
Color: 0.01Lux@F1.2/3D-DNR/WDR
TrueDay&Night/IRDistance: 30m/IP66
DC 12V,7W MAX / PoE(802.3af)
Serial no: 594199052

Material code: 300808568
Lot Number: 4500928789
SF Version: V5.3.8_151224
Date: 04/2016
Made in China
IP Address:

Is there any way to tell the region from the label?

Can I update RR with EU Firmware to make it Multilanguage?
I think it depends on what the actual internal region setting is on your NVR.
My 7816N-E2 NVRs are 'AARR' but have Chinese region set - so if I used the stock EU ML firmware I'd get the 15 beep bootloop about ' !!! You device is illegal !!! !! You bought in China !!'
EN menus were maintained by web GUI updates starting from the original 3.0.8 firmware which did not care about region, and an EN flag was maintained in the device configuration which was kept / translated by the updates.
But a 'reset to defaults' would clear the configuration and result in Chinese menus.

Getting the hang of it
The problem is, even if I try I dont have firmware to get back. The device is. DS-7732NI-E4/16P. It has english labels and text on the device itself.

There is a big selection of firmware versions here for that model, from 3.0.5 to 3.4.80
http://www.hikvisioneurope.com/portal/index.php?dir=Product Firmware/Back-ends/Recorder/NVR/DS-7600NI-E1(E2) 7700NI-E4/

Your -NI NVR should be OK, the NI suffix is generally thought to be upgradeable. But you do need to be conscious of the risks in trying to get to ML.
Be aware though, that the web GUI update has a rollback prohibition from the 3.4.80 version.

Getting the hang of it
I mean I don't have a hacked firmware in case it goes to BEEP BEEP BEEP mode.

SUCCESS with hik euro Firmware

Multi-language as well as no longer bricked?

So a couple (more) questions:
What version of firmware did you use from the Hikvision EU site?
What firmware did you use that caused the bootloop? US site, perhaps?
Might help others ...

It depends on whether you want just English as the language choice, or Multiple Languages.
I'm surprised you needed to update a new NVR -what version came with it?
