Hi all,

Just purchased my first set of cameras from Andy @EMPIRETECANDY

2 x ipc-hfw1831C-pir
1 x ipc-a46
1 x ipc-hfw2831t-zs and junction box

He has been fantastic so far and offered a lot of his time.

I sent Andy pictures of my house and he advised on locations and camera types.

Looking forward to receiving the camera's and wiring them up to my zoneminder Linux guest on a Xeon server and then integrating with home assistant / Google assistant to cast to Android TV.

Big thanks to all the members here posting videos and advice on the various models.

Quick start
1) Use Dahua starlight cameras or Hikvision darkfighter cameras or ICPT Night eye cameras (https://store.ipcamtalk.com/) if you need good low light cameras.
2) use a VPN to access home network (openVPN)
3) Do not use wifi cameras.
4) Do not use cloud storage
5) Do Not use uPNP, P2P, QR, do not open ports,
6) More megapixel is not necessarily better.
7) Avoid chinese hacked cameras (most ebay, amazon, aliexpress cameras(not all, but most))
8) Do not use reolink, ring, nest cameras (they are junk)
9) If possible use a turret camera , bullet collect spiders, dome collect dirt and reflect light (IR)
10) Use only solid copper, AWG 23 or 24 ethernet wire. , no CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum)

Thanks for the pointers, I had been doing research prior to joining the forum and Andy from Empiretec has guided me well. I'm going all dahua but decided against the turret due to the bulk and weight of it on the side of the house, turret for that location and 25/30fps instead of 15fps and better 1/1.8" for low light.
I work in IT as senior infrastructure so I'll be VLAN'ing the cameras off and denying all outbound from them with PFsense (VM) guest on Xeon host and already have openvpn on there working. The plan so far is to keep to Linux (VM) and have built zoneminder as a docker attached to 18tb of ext4 storage but may consider BlueIris on a Windows VM.

What I am average at is drilling and cabling up neatly but do intend to buy solid copper outdoor cat5e from somewhere like kenable?

I also used Kenable for many bits & pieces (Cat6 keystone patch panel, to name but one)

I went for everything being Cat6, rather than 5e, but then again it carries my entire home network including CCTV & my main ISP

Can help with drilling if you need it depending where in Cheshire you are - I'm about 5 miles from Stalybridge
