Hikvision 5MP cams

Crap lens, crap image.

I'm going to get one of these 5MPs to play with. I could do with a garage camera anyway, so can sit in there.

As a matter of fact I got Longse 3MP with IMX124 sensor, you can tell that sensor is good but lens is cheapo (I also had to manually adjust it as it was out of focus from the factory), despite that it still outperforms Hikvision 3MP/4MP at night and I am using it as a garage cam.

1) No doubt, Hikvision is about ease of use (but we both know that)
2) Good info. I was just looking at one of them. Better at night too I suppose? Just I want a 3MP IMX322 (4:3 instead of 16:9) for somewhere.

It is better/cleaner at night, but daylight slightly worse then Hikvision, like I said this isn't the sensor issue I suspect but crappy lens. For garage cam it's fine, but other then that i wouldn't buy it

I ended up getting DS-2CD2345-I as my 1st ipcam. Having "interesting" issues might be too overwhelming for a newbie hehe.

On the crappy lens topic - Hikvision cams have M12 mount, so it should be pretty easy to install a quality lens? Any recommendations on which lenses are good?
I found one cheap seller and one upscale and expensive:
http://www.m12lenses.com/Board-Lenses-s/12.htm
https://www.optitrack.com/products/m12-lenses/

While I have upgraded lenses myself (several 25mm conversions on hik bullets,)
I'd recommend against messing with it. Might as well just spend the money on a better
camera with the right lens to begin with.

I only did it as I had extra cams lying around and needed another
timesync/hobby (like a hole in the head)... :-)

I just received a couple 5MP turrets from AliEx seller. 2355 w/4mm lenses & fw v5.4.0.
will mount 'em up next to my current 3MP units for comparisons. stay tuned...

I had actually intended to order the -F version with SD cards from the same seller, but i messed up. oh well.
ordered 6/7, got a message to clarify lens option almost immediately, shipped 6/10 via DHL, arrived 6/14. not bad!

got one up and running on the bench. default password is 1234567a, version 5.4.0-xxx, multi-language defaulting to english.

First thing I notice is that 2MP mode (16x9 @ 1080x1920) is NOT wider then 5MP (4:3) mode, unlike the older 3MP cams.
Looks like they are no longer down-sampling from the fullwidth of the sensor for 2MP mode, which to me means night
images in 2MP mode won't be using as much light (less pixels) as the 3MP cams. not important, really, as I plan to
use them at full rez 4:3...

What size is the max sub stream?

704x576.

PAL @50hz only, no 60hz option and the exposure rates are all multiples of 25 rather than 30.
no surprise there, just thought i'd mention it. not usually an issue until you've got 60hz LED's in the view, like at Xmas...

screen shots at 1080x1920 (2mp), 2048x1536 (3mp) and 2560x1920 (5mp) (there's also 720p available for main stream)

The field of view is wider for 5mp than for 3mp (cropped),
but 2mp appears to be vertically squished view from 3mp.
no aspect control settings for the stream that i can tell
(of course the cam UI's live view has the usual 4:3/16:9
mode button so it can be made 'correct' there)

new turret @ 5mp (2355) compared to 3mp bullet (2032), both 4mm lenses:

Yep that 1080 is squished. At least they fixed the substream with the 5mp(4mp cameras have a smaller sub). Thanks for your post, thats to bad about the 1080 :(

the 5mp has a lot more detail for sure, sharper!

oh, just noticed there's a third stream too,
and it goes from 320x240 up to 1080p,
which is also vertically challenged...

It is very slight improvement over 3MP, but not very fair comparison since 3MP is quite old now. If you compare with 4MP there no noticeable improvement.

i've never had any 4mp to compare with, so i'll take your word for that. :-)

no gain adjustment in exposure settings. is that a 5.4.0 thing? or hardware?

What do you mean no gain adjustment? Can you post a few screendumps of the user interface?
What about WDR? Is it dynamic WDR (i.e. software based) or is it true WDR (i.e. based on sensor ability?). Can you do some shots with a person indoors next to bright light window?
