I'd speculate that it was a complete oversight that they'd used a different rule for partitioning the RAM between the DSP and the CPU, and only discovered the problems after userbase feedback.
So it's possible to get OOM (Out Of Memory) errors even when not doing anything very demanding.
There is quite a bit extra in the 3.4.80 firmware that pushes the RAM requirement a bit higher, and maybe their testing focussed on the main changes.
It may be, and it is speculation, that they have fine-tuned the memory allocation in the 3.4.82 version, though as @
Kieran mentioned, it's not explicitly stated in the release notes, only by omission. @
