If you had this set up what would you use ?

Hi folks

This house was pre-wired to 4 positions, not overly ideal from the previous owners but hey ho. You can see from my perfectly drawn world leading diagram where the POE positions are located. All are at 8ft. The back yard is small but we want to be able to see whoever jumps over the wall (if they are stupid), at present there is no illumination but we are considering a floodlight which we would likely place in the middle. I am open to not putting a floodlight up if that makes it very difficult for the cameras. There are two positions in the back yard

We have one option for one side of the house so that would need to do well in low light.
Lastly the front, this is actually near a dusk till dawn light that isn't that powerful but would obviously make a difference to camera choice - ideally we want something to identify anyone coming up the driveway or read a plate if it parks outside.

It's a shame they didn't pre-wire a few other places but it's still better than nothing.

I'm pretty sure at this point I've been convinced to give B.I a try.
We live in Nevada, so summer is HOT and the one at the front would be in direct sunlight all day so it's going to need to work in high temps.
Ideally I would prefer turret cameras.

As a complete noob it's a touch overwhelming, like others I was going down the Reolink path but I stumbled across this wonderful forum and you've changed my mind !!!
Please can you guys help with some options and recommendations to narrow down the field for me
Thanks :)

Hi @flyoverfred

3 story, stucco, Nevada ..

pre-wired .. only 4 positions. ( Cat 5e ? or ?? )

Do you have an attached garage ?

Gents

Is there a way that if a camera picks someone up in my back yard that I could do some sort of automation to turn the lights in my house on ?

Through some home automation type system yes.

Home Assistant is one way many do it, but I am sure there are other ways. It just isn't native to the camera itself.

Yep that's what I was getting at, I just wasn't sure what the go to solution would be - I'll go and research home assistant - thanks @wittaj

yes 5e and attached garage yes

I would use the attached garage as a way to get some of the cameras up, will require a little opening up of some drywall areas where you want cameras.

If a newer construction should be able to use a stud finder to narrow down the stud locations and with a few selective cuts from stud to stud you can get a couple of key spots open to the wall you want to put cameras on.

Sometimes can easily get coverage of the front door, front of garage, and side of house from an attached garage.

Just a thought - if you have BI in the basement/garage you could use one of those cat5e cables to service a switch in the attic. At that point you can tap into the switch with a ton of cams and not worry about running more cables up 3 stories.

it all terminates in the master bedroom closet on the third floor, that's where the switch and router are. Can you explain a little more because if I could put the gear elsewhere that would be a better option imho

That's the beauty of IP stuff - all you need is an ethernet cable to one point and POE switch at then end and run more.

would this be good for running BI ? I'd choose the 500gb ssd although that is likely overkill as that would only house the OS, 16gb ram, windows 11 then add my own surveillance hard drive. Comes out about $228 + whatever the extra hd would be

Just a heads up....that's a 3rd gen Interl i7 CPU and should you ever have to replace the drive that Windows 11 is on (should you choose that option) or re-install Windows 11 you'll have some hoops to jump through to do so. Gen 8 or later CPU's accomodate the requirement by Windows 11 for TPM 2.0 for security purposes; Windows 10 and older does not require TPM 2.0 and CPU's older than Gen 8 do not automatically allow the install of 11; there's a process and I personally would not want to be tied into that process.

Therefore, look for gen 8 or above/newer.....my suggestion.

I use a Shelly smart switch on a lamp, and it can be alerted easily in Blue Iris. When the deer drop by, the lights go on. No need for Home assistant or anything, just the smart switch.

set up an alert as an "http alert" in BI "alert" tab, "on alert":
" lightname:password@192.168.1.xxx/relay/0/?turn=ON " for example.. I have an "ON", a "wait", and an "OFF" action to have them go on for (x) seconds (the wait). Simple and effective, and you can make a profile so it works only during the hours you want.

+1^^^.
Love the marriage of BI and Shelly devices:

I was looking at similar on the forum earlier and in the post I read someone mentioned they run hot. I'm assuming these are for the camera end of the chain and you split there ? - Vegas gets hot, like we hit over 120 degrees last summer hot so I have to take that into consideration too :)
This product seems to have a very small size, with an input power of 60W. In that case, combined with the high temperatures of summer, it is very likely to stop working due to heat. Perhaps you could try some similar devices that are larger in size but have better heat dissipation.
