Ok, so I wasn't able to get new snaps before nightfall. Which is probably OK because at least I know that my daytime settings are close. Here is what I'm seeing at night. Any thoughts?

Man that just looks like IR isn’t getting there....?
Try increasing Gain and opening Iris, and use HLC backlight at about 65 for starts

Are you just using the snapshot it takes or are you viewing the video and going frame by frame to pull the best frame?

can you post a short clip of a vehicle passing through the scene?

So I had just been using the snapshot option in BI after the trigger. But, I will get a short clip, and post that. Will also make those changes you suggested. Thanks!

Hmmmm don’t know not a BI guy.... The NVR lets you do frame by frame ..

I would think the playback has a play and pause button at least.. play pause play pause ...

So your angle isn’t good. Now you get to do the time consuming chore of adjusting the focal point. I’d start by angling up a bit. The plate should be as close to dead center if the screen as possible

Ah, gotcha. Just so that I understand, by angling up, you mean pointing the camera further up the road so as to decrease the angle?

Ok, I understand. I'll give that a shot. I was trying to capture both directions of traffic on this road, so I'll have to do some fine tuning.

Yeah it took me a couple of weeks, hell months really to get it where I wanted it. That’s why we say LPR is part Art part Science .. lots of tweaking

So with a little tweaking based on bigredfish suggestions yesterday, and a little more today with playing with contrast and HLC, I'm getting excellent captures during the daytime.

Progress!

fwiw at my capture point of 120 ft I’m using an external IR Illuminator to get adequate IR on target.
You may want to step off that distance .....

I'm using an external illuminator as well. Now try Plate Recognizer in BI. See how much percentage do you get, with these settings.

Nighttime still a work in progress. Sometimes I get useable snaps, and sometimes it's just garbage. I did order an IR illuminator tonight and will try that out when it arrives on Monday.

Yeah it just doesnt look like enough IR.. Try playing wth your Gain and iris to brighten it up. One at a time.
