IR for ALPR

So It says 30 for the IRIS here, but It was 40 when I got those photos..... I am hoping that makes the photo better.

This has not changed... since those photos were taken.

I supposed I should probably park my car at this point and leave it overnight and try different settings, although that would probably make my towns police log.

the 5241 changes it's day night focus a little bit when it switches over. I had a helluva time getting night plates consistently until i went Job1 on it's ass and left it in Night mode 24/7. I had enough other cameras on site (19) to make up for the loss of the 5241's day view.
however,
and having said that,
there are ways to save the night config and the day configs focus settings to the profile somehow,,,I just never had time for that.

Dropping the Iris makes the image darker, set all the setting like the below

if you can't park your car. get some 3m type trailer reflector tape from your local truck stop :) and cut 3" chunck, or a bicycle reflectoer and position it inconspicously somewhere like this. this you can fiddle with things until you get a crisp setting on that, or one that starts picking up plates in a high percentage.

I'm cheating. I'm using the 5442e-z4e bullet for lpr. because my distances are short.

uh oh PoPo....can just make out his grille guard. i guess i dont need that plate :) His back one was hard to see compared to the civilian ones. Stealthy.

What does a 1/1000 shutter speed look like on your situation? sometimes 2000 is too much.

Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason for good/bad caps. Here are two examples from the same cam at the same distance/position less than three minutes apart. Both are front plates.

And here is that second car being captured by the second cam, rear plate.

Are you able to capture the License plates during the day if you keep the camera in night mode 24/7?

Yes, I use that method also on one of mine

All night mode means is that the image is in B/W during the day instead of color. But it prevents the loss of focus that can happen, especially if someone is running an NVR and can't use the sunrise/sunset utility to force the focus for night or don't want to go into the schedule several times a year to adjust the day and night profile schedule based on changing sunset/sunrise.

Or do as I did for my neighbor with an NVR. I set up the schedule to be day profile 9am to 4pm to get color captures, so even in the middle of winter, running that schedule still has enough daylight to get a focus for the night profile. Now the drawback is in the summer from 6am to 9am and 4pm until 9pm, there is enough daylight that it could be in color, but this is the tradeoff to get some color during the day but also not have to deal with changing the schedule 3 or 4 times per year.

Go to 1/2000 or even 1/1000 if cars are traveling under say 30mph

Assume you have IR at Manual Max?

Yes. And the IR spot beam dead center on.....

I actually tried some other settings-- and they are yours! Post #3 from this link.... That is set at 1/1000...

I walked out with my manual plate and got this....

Scary ghost!

This almost makes me thing my angle of 25% is too steep!

Angle matters for sure. How far is that capture point again?

We have seen how different sensors in the same model camera can result in widely different settings, to go along with every field of view is different.

I think your distance and angle is fine, it is just trial and error at this point to get it down.

This thread showed how important the settings are for focus, to go along with the actual focus.

Changing saturation on a B/W image can actually sharpen focus....go figure.

We are close to same angle. I am at 175 feet.

When you do the straight on shot and we see how fuzzy it is, that is just unfortunately dialing in the parameters at this point... a frustrating trial and error I must say!

Can you leave the plate out there or park a car so that you can adjust the parameters real time until you get a clean image?

Feedback?

I realized the IR spotlight was a little bit to the left, so when a car came into view it was dark...

Here is my car with settings-- no lights on.... I mucked with the settings to get what I think looks best.... Wondering how this will fair with headlights?
