I need a new computer for home to run BI as a service 24x7 in addition to basic photoshop work. No more than 12 cameras. No gaming.

FenderBender...what is your opinion of this machine?

"up to 4.o GHZ" is deceptive; I wish they'd specify 4790, 4790S, 4790T or 4790K.

Got to love a bit of dell marketing. I mean how many Intel Core i7 fully built PCs don't have a Heatsink?

I have nothing serious to add... sorry!

$888.88

Can't remove the video card, it comes as configured.

You're always recommending the Dell 7020's and they can be had for $500.00, correct?

You can always remove the card after you get it...for 888 its WAY overpriced...you can get a 7040 with skylake for that kind of money (even less)...500 is the max for a i7-4790...

Thanks. I've always been a sucker for Dell Precision workstations. What I really want is an i7-4790, 4790K or I7-6700K with a 500GB system driver, no graphics card and 16 to 32GB of memory. Maybe a barebones i7 and I'll buy the SSD? What do you think of using an SSD as a system drive? Any and all ideas and thoughts are appreciated.

Now I wish I has paid attention to all the chatter regarding these issues in the past. smiley6.gif

I would not pay that kind of premium for a precision over optiplex. An SSD is a good idea for the OS, just make sure is a quality brand like, intel, crucial (mx series) or samsung. Im partial to the crucial mx200...
Here is a 7040 for $660..all you need is a bit more memory and ssd.

Thanks a million Fenderman.

I've looked at so many eBay i7 machines that I've developed a headache.

Question: that i7-6700 ($660.00) @ 3.4ghz benchmarks at 9,970. Would I not be better off purchasing this i7-3770 ($369.99) @ 3.40GHz which benchmarks at 9,339?

Since I'm going to add memory and pull the drive out of each machine, does the i7-6700 (or the newer built of the model 9040 hardware) have an advantage over the i7-3770?

Going to get some Advil.

i7-3770 is 4 years old. i7-6700 is more energy-efficient but not really much faster. With that price difference, I can see why you are indecisive.

If it helps, the 6700's integrated graphics are more advanced.

Version 5 (Skylake)
The Skylake microarchitecture adds a full fixed-function H.265/HEVC main/8-bit encoding and decoding acceleration, hybrid and partial HEVC main10/10-bit decoding acceleration, JPEG encoding acceleration for resolutions up to 16,000×16,000 pixels, and partial VP9 encoding and decoding acceleration.[12]
Of course Blue Iris does not support any of that new stuff yet, and may not for a long time.

What BP said...additionally the hd530 is considerable improved over the 4600..at least in benchmark tests...965 vs. 705...now those are for 3d tests so I dont know how the performance increase would translate to BI, but I would not get a 4 year old system as a vms.

Thanks for all of the information fellas. Another question...

This is for home where I don't have a lot of space. I will run with the integrated Intel graphics and I won't need to add and expansion cards to the system. Understanding this, are there any disadvantages that you are aware of to purchasing a Dell Small Form Factor (SFF) system instead of a Mini-Tower (MT) system?

I have not seen the inside of the new 7040 but the 7020 does not have room for more than one drive. There is a post where a user squeezed an ssd and a 3.5 in...on the other hand the HP elite desk sff has room for a 2.5 and 3.5 natively if you remove the DVD drive there is room for another 2.5...

Good point Fenderman...

7040 MT:
13.8"H x 10.8"D x 6.1"W
1 internal 3.5” HDD (convertible to 5.25” ODD)
2 internal 2.5” HDD
1 external slim ODD
4 DIMM slots Non-ECC dual-channel 2133MHz DDR4 SDRAM, up to 32GB

7040 SSF:
11.4"H x 11.5"D x 3.6"W
1 internal 3.5” HDD (convertible to 2 2.5” HDD)
1 external slim ODD
4 DIMM slots Non-ECC dual-channel 2133MHz DDR4 SDRAM, up to 32GB

In addition, it looks like the SSF space savings are not all too great.

It appears that the "add-on's" I want will add $242.00 to the price (16GB of ram will add approximately $75.00 and a 500GB Samsung EVO SSD will add $167.00) and I may be able to save and reuse the 4GB which comes with the system.

@Q2U You dont really need the 500gb evo unless you intend to store video files there too...250 is way more than enough...
Generally its recommend to buy memory in matching sets...

Matching DIMMs recommended...I forgot about that...thanks.

The difference between the Samsung EVO 500 vs. the 250 appears to be approximately $74.00. For that small amount I believe I'll go with the EVO 500.

So here's how this is shaping up: I'll compromise and go with an 8GB memory machine because I probably won't need 16GB anyway, and I can easily up the ram at a later date. If I can find a Dell 7040 MT i7-6700 @ 3.4ghz with 8GB of ram and a 1TB drive 7200 rpm drive for approximately $680.00 I can then add the Samsung EVO 500GB SSD for $175.00 and use the 1TB mechanical drive as the Blue Iris video drive. My total cost will ballpark at $854.00 for a much better performing unit than the T1700 4790 I was originally thinking of.

Plan B has been formed.

Great price! Same configuration on Dell's web site (sans the SSD) is $956.50. Where did you find yours?

I purchased the Dell 7040 i7-6700 on ebay from tKing2002 for $660.00 and the 500GB Smasung EVO SSD from Amazon for $158.90. But I had to scrimp and settle for a 500CD Blue Iris data drive and only 8GB of ram, both of which I'll probably upgrade at a later date.
