First let me say that all of this is fairly new to me so if I make a stupid comment or ask a dumb question please forgive me. My situation is I need a video surveillance system for a vacant warehouse/office with no power. All power will have to come from solar/battery setup (that part I have handled). Communication with security system will have to be via cellular router using wi-fi hotspot from a local ISP. The limit on the amount of data you are allowed each month is 5GB and cost $10 per GB to increase. This is where I really have no clue about this as to how much data usage I am going to need nor do I have unlimited funds to speculate.

The Blue Iris software looks great from what I have seen and I think would probably work for me. Only need 6-8 poe cameras but I want something that I can get a pic sent to my cell phone based on motion detection and then I can decide whether to call police or not. It does not need to be recording all the time, in fact it shouldn't be recording hardly any of the time or maybe I could decide whether to continue recording based on pic I receive. From what I have read using BI controls the motion sensing, not the camera motion sensor, although you still need quality cameras for the better graphics. If I am not doing much recording can I get by with the dvr/nvr/pc being offsite and just have an 8 port poe switch onsite or would that be too much data usage on the wi-fi. If I can get a pretty good grasp of what will work best then I will work on more precise cameras and recorders I would need.

I hope some one here can give me some good ideas on how to proceed as I need to do something with this building or I am never going to be able to sell it. Between the people stealing copper and the ones too lazy to haul their trash off, it is hard to keep a vacant warehouse and surrounding area presentable to potential buyers. If I am lucky maybe this will help me get a couple of them locked up.

Welcome to the forum...because of your power limitation i would not recommend blue iris...you would need the system on premises because of your limited bandwidth...What you can do is either
1) use an NVR on premises (they use less power than a pc running bi with 6 3mp cameras)
2)use cameras with SD card slots..with a 64gb card you should be fine for at least a couple of days..probably much more as it doesn't seem to be a high traffic location.
For camera recommendations let us know what you will be monitoring, indoors, outdoors, size of room/area as well as the lighting conditions.
As far as motion detection...the cameras and blue iris both use pixel based detection which if set to sensitive will give you lots of false alarms...you may want to use a camera that has an alarm in to which you would wire a PIR motion sensor...The camera can send you an email notification.

Thanks for the tips. I knew I was going to be limited between power and bandwidth but not sure how much BI takes although I am sure it is more than I want to spend. It would be nice if I could avoid as many false alarms as possible although I have yet to see an alarm system that didn't get them, that is why I wanted to be able to get a pic of what the camera saw.

As far as cameras go I figure I will need 7 for now. 1 outside looking down at an enclosure where a/c and meter base comes into building (or used to); 3 inside office building with limited light and actually no light in one room but an entry door which creates a back light when opened (has to be opened from inside)room sizes maybe 14x20'. The remaining 3 would be in an open warehouse aimed at a 12' roll-up door, 2 entry doors about 10' apart and one camera aimed across 3 dock doors (35-45') and the only light in warehouse is from a few skylights. None of the cameras should be aimed where any traffic/motion should be other than a stray animal every now an then.

If there wont be much light and not much movement you should be able to avoid most false alarms.
This hikvision 2732 is vandal resistant and has sd card, varifocal lens, alarm in/out 3 axis lens so it can be wall mounted ..You must order the S version to get the alarm inputs
you need to install it properly or or you will get ir reflection see pdf in post 10 by @milk is bad

I really like the hikvision turret camera 2332/3332 but there is no alarm in or onboard storage...
If you dont mind bullets (they are easier to install, more notice able, but less vandal proof) you might want to look at this camera...sd card, but no alarm in or out

Also the 2732 varifocal camera is available in a bullet version called the 2632, sd card, varifocal, and alarm in/out (S version)...and no ir refection issues...

There are lots of choices..so read a lot before you buy..wait till some others chime in who might have better suggestions for your purpose..
