New Dahua N22AL12 Budget Cam w/Starlight

hey mat i just found 22 1/3" 4MP "starlight" cams in the 2019 V3 catalog, not sure if they're worth it or not. the newer 4MP stuff seems to act like some of the older 2MP starlights from back in the nayr days. the new IPC-HDW3441TM-AS 4MP 1/3" has a lux of .005 on paper while the ole 5231RZ-E is .006. i wish there was a database where you could enter the cam model number and see a daytime and nighttime image so we could use our own eyeballs to make a somewhat more educated purchase decision lol. i need to be careful with my spending, i'm going to have a plethora of cameras over here all shapes and sizes just to test out :)

Hi @funkybunch

"i wish there was a database where you could enter the cam model number and see a daytime and nighttime image"

In terms of reviews: all of the reviews I have seen are not in a controlled / scientific manner. So doing direct comparisons of models across reviews which vary in the scene and lighting conditions will not be able to give you accurate comparisons. Would be nice if something like that existed, however that would require a lot of work to create.

I would encourage you to pick up a camera and do a comparison and post it here.

it will be some time but i'd love to post some video reviews or just some video and images of different cameras, youtube is a great help along with the members of this forum.

The Dahua N22AL12 I ordered from B&H which was on backorder arrived yesterday. I set it up in the garage and so far so good. Very impressed with such an inexpensive IP cam. I'd share pics of the garage view but after I set it up and saw the garage from the IP cam I realized what an embarrassing mess my garage is therefore just use your imagination...LOL.

Guys, I understood "IPC-HDW2431TM-AS-S2" mentioned above essentially the same camera that Andy sells as the "IPC-T2431T-AS"? Agreed not as good as the more expensive 4MP or the 2MP Starlights but just adding to the conversation above where someone was advised to be cautious against this model....

Reviewed here: REVIEW: Budget 4MP Turret Comparison - IPC-T2431T-AS vs Chinese HDW4433C-A

"No, its not a 5442 or a 5231 but it does just barely tick the box of 'Starlight" with a Min. Illumination of 0.008 Lux @ F1.6 , I was quite surprised how well the IPC-T2431T-AS performed with some typical driveway lights for less than 1/2 the cost of one of the upper-end Starlights. This isnt a camera to use in forced color with just moonlight, but with some typical house/driveway lights and or streetlights I was able to easily keep it in color, and IR mode produced a great image. For comparison, the 4433C-A min illumination specs show 0.01LuxF1.2 (color); 0.001LuxF1.2 (black and white)"

Sorry for killing your hype for N22AL12 but
0.002 lux (Starlight+) and more cheaper...

Pretty interesting product.

The IPC-HDW2431TM-AS-S2 is around $60 from Aliexpress
I think i found it (there is even one where seller advertises Eenglish firmware:rofl:) .
But not sure if it is better value compared to N22AL12. With BH it is US model with us support; IPC-HDW2431TM-AS-S2 just a seller support from china.
I do like form factor of IPC-HDW2431TM-AS-S2 a bit better but i think base is plastic. N22AL12 is full metal body . Also you have to consider IPC-HDW2431TM-AS-S2 4MP, 1/3 VS N22AL12 2MP, 1/2.7.
I guess depends on situation. Some places with good lighting might benefit from better resolution. :idk:

If the seller is Xinray on Aliexpress, I'd recommend them. I bought a bunch of Hikvision cameras from them in the past.

N22AL12 looks good if you don't need to use the IR. I tend to stay away from domes altogether as IR reflection can be an issue. I buy turrets or bullets.

1/2.8” 2MP 0.002 Lux F1.6 v/s 1/2.7” 4MP 0.009 Lux F2.0

That will be the big question for the new year until someone makes a good review because they cost almost the same
and the models I said are full metal
