New RCA HSDB2A 3MP Doorbell IP Camera

So I tested running three 24/7 streams, one to BI and the other two (not recording) to VLC on separate PCs. For me the three stream rule held up, I tried 4, even 5 and had droppped frames as well as streaming actually stopping. We think the DBs CPU/Mem. can only handle three streams. Even played a bit with its sub-stream too, which had three main and a sub running, still had dropped frames but not as bad as running all mains.

Hi all. Newbie here who lurked enough to get the Nelly's version and install it. To give back, here are a few comments/questions:

  • Chime was decades-old Nutone. Xformer was same vintage 10V. To prevent problems, didn't even try to use it - step 1 was to replace with 16V, and no problems.
  • Sorry if this is somewhere in the thread, I didn't see it: Don't try the doorbell to ring the chime until after you've configured the doorbell! Wasted a bunch of time chasing my tail, which in retrospect is kinda obvious since need to tell the doorbell what kind of chime it's going to ring...
  • Have used the Hikvision Batch Config tool to set video parameters. Works fine, but always have to select it & Refresh.
  • Used Guarding Vision. Works fine, after getting over normal how-does-this-work issues. Haven't seen a compelling reason to change to other software.
  • Beep is LOUD! Mail[wo]man quickly figured out how to reach around and not trigger it. :)

  • Problem #1: A couple of times the doorbell has lost some or all of its configuration. Not exactly sure why, but it could be related to ...
  • Have added the Doorbell to my Dahua NVR for (video) motion detection, which works nicely as a 2nd capture. Have tried to access the config screen from the NVR->CAMERA page, but this fails - and may be what kills the config? Don't plan to try this again... :)
  • Problem #2: Had to stop the NVR from updating camera times. NVR has this as a global option - not selectable by camera. With the Doorbell, it would deselect the NTP setting and give it the wrong time - 1 hour behind. I thought (and still think) the bad time is DST-related, but no combination of Doorbell settings kept NTP selected or the time right...
  • Problem #3: IR strength: Reduced all but the streetside to 5' minimum so just opening the door & looking out doesn't trigger it. Then had to reduce the streetside distance to the 5' minimum - otherwise every big truck that goes by triggeres it.

  • Question #1: Is there any way to have the NVR recognize the PIR from the Doorbell?!
  • Question #2: Is the night color any good (with porch light off)? Or should for sure use IR?

Regards & thanks!
Thanks for the share.
Chiming in here...
I/we have a motion sensored porch light that when activated will turn off the DB IR. Some here do leave their porch light on all night and keep IR off, it really depends on your setup.

Right, so @David L I really feel we've solved the issue and the issue was the incorrect wiring that you and others in this forum have helped with. I'm surprised the professional electricians did not know what a consenting short was when they decided to short both of my old chimes whilst charging me several hundred bucks. This time I did all the work on my own, labelled all the wires and know what to do in future. Right, so, should I get adventurous and try the 2nd chime? If so, how would I wire it? The wires are currently disconnected for the 2nd chime.

Is anyone using the DB1 cam with Shinobi? I'm having issues where its causing the monitor to crash from ffmpeg not liking dropped frames from the wifi.

Does Shinobi have an option to switch to UDP instead of TCP? I think UDP is more tolerant of dropped frames, however it may send frames out of order, causing issues. I would experiment with forcing TCP and UDP.

Great News. Not unusual for most Eletricians not to be adverse with low voltage wiring. I actual had my Electrician out one day before our mandatory lockdown to run about 10 ethernet runs for me, to him it was just cable, I terminated them myself. Don't get me wrong, this guy does great work, if I needed him to replace/install the DB tranformer, no problem, but for him to do any troubling shooting on the low voltage side of the trans. he would be lost.
So who do you call? Not like you can call a Doorbell Tech. You did right, they should of told you if they had low voltage experience or not. An Alarm Tech. would be able to find a short, bad wiring, bad contact, but what Alarm company could you call? Maybe an independant contractor, sure not any major National company, they would want to install their DB and charge you monthly for their system. :)
If it were me, I would hold off on your second Chime for awhile. Run with what you got and see if it works for ya'll. With the 16v your Chime should work as intended, not as loud as the 24v trans. but hopefully loud enough. A second Chime is still questionable if it will work right with one power kit. If you just have to have the second Chime we can help assist in what we would do adding one for ourselves.

@Pliable Pixels

I concur with David about waiting to connect your second doorbell chime for a bit.

Ok fair enough. No the second chime is not important at all, so I'll keep it off! Thanks!

Can someone on this forum who has a 256 GB card working in ANY of these cameras:
  • tell me which brand and version firmware your running
  • pull the card out of the camera and plug it in the computer and bring up Windows Disk Manager and tell me how it's partitioned (1 or 2) and formatted (FAT32, exFAT, RAW, or something else)
I ran into this issue back in February trying to use my new Samsung 256GB EVO card in my RCA doorbell replacing the existing 128GB card. I could never get it to recognize the full 256GB and it kept trying to initialize into two 128GB partitions. I then contacted Ezviz support who claims it should work with 256GB cards and gave them all the specs on my 256GB but they said I need to try a different card or brand which I told them it's not the card as I use the same card on my smart phones and other security cameras fine. I'll just wait until there is a newer firmware to actually enable the full 256GB card since I already record 24x7 to my NVR and not worried about 128GB limit.

I haven't been checking this board for a couple weeks but has anyone upgraded to the newest Hik-Connect app v4.3? I'm still on v3.11.1.1023 and things work fine. You have to go to Hikvision App Store site to download the Hik-Connect.apk file.

Yes, I have tried it. Did not notice anything revolutionary. It still does not do image deskewing. That feature is the reason for me to continue use the ezviz app.

@David L: "Chiming" - nice. :)

Our porch light isn't bright enough and we generally leave it off anyway unless we have a need for it to be on. It's also a yellow bulb. Tried no IR with the light off and scene was too dark to be useful - not a low lux camera - and without separate Day/Night configs there's no way to brighten it w/o messing up daytime. So, IR it is.

I was actually more interested in capturing the PIR alarm on the NVR - is that possible?

Thanks.

can you replace your porch light with an LED with higher lumens? Maybe a color temp more towards the bright white blue spectrum, as opposed to yellow. Thats what I did, an always leave my porch light on anyways. Picture looks great anytime day or night... no need for IR

I installed one like this many moons ago, it was extremely easy to install, we have LED bulbs in it.

that does look really nice

Thanks @flynreelow , @David L .

When we use the light, we like the yellow, less bugs...

I think I'll put this on the back burner for now. More pressing things to work on... Maybe pick it up sometime later, if I ever do any home auto...

Regards.
Gotcha, funny but never knew how many bugs we had on our porch until the Smart DB install, since I record 24/7 the IR seems to attract them.
