New RCA HSDB2A 3MP Doorbell IP Camera

Thank you for the POE Tip. I just got my POE Switch yesterday and found the POE Wattage section...Awesome, so I can set a value/limit there...

On mine I can have the switch out put power even if no device is detected. POE devices kind of talk to the switch (its just a resister value or some thing simple like that) and tells it too send power and how much too send. If your switch does not do that you can pick up an POE Extractor box or POE SIP board.

So default POE power would be by request of the POE device, so do I have to set a Wattage limit? What I liked about TP-Link, they have an Emulator of the switches management software on their site. One can quickly see what features the switch has, below is my POE Switch:
You can see in the POE section under SYSTEM tab what settings I have.

The POE profiles may come in handy per Camera brand...That is if I need to waver from default settings.

You only seem to have port watts under manual mode with no way to set the voltage. I would check and see what the MAX volts for your VDB is and check your POW volts output (I am betting its 48vac) is before hooking up!

If your POE switch volts is too high just get a POE Extractor with the power rating you need. They are only about $15 for the higher amp SIP units that have a heatsink that will do up to 3amps RMS.

Make sure you turn MACHANICAL chime OFF or you will create a dead short on your switch when the button is pushed. I added a slow blow resettable 1.5amp fuse to mine just to be safe.

!! Be sure you check the spec sheet for YOUR BRAND NAME VDB hardware !!
!! They are NOT the same !!

It MAY not matter (same hardware should have the same min/max power) but the spec sheets are not the same so just check to be safe and go by what ever it lists for YOURS.

Thanks. No I do not plan to connect my LaView DB to my switch via POE, I have a 16v 30va transformer that I just need to add/move to my UPS. I will have to run Romex from the UPS in the closet to the trans. in the attic.

I configured it manually and I can also set Motion Detection for recording only those events.

The url for the path is: <admin>:<pw>@<ipaddr>:554/Streaming/Channels/101

After the manual configuration, you edit camera settings and go to Event Detection settings (second screenshot), where you can fine-tune your detection area.

Like user Diabolic faced in the past, I can't seem to add the RTSP stream of the camera to synology.

  • I have the EZVIZ DB1. Stock firmware
  • I can see the feed in VLC using <admin>:<pw>@<ipaddr>:554/Streaming/Channels/101
    [*]
Yet when adding it synology using "User Defined", it cannot connect to the camera
  • Synology and camera are on the same network

Any ideas? Would like to avoid flashing new firmware...

Can't speak for synology but it works fine on both of QNAP's NVR softwares, QVR and Surveillance station. There is something odd about the RTSP stream of these doorbells as discussed earlier in this thread, as it relates to the audio encoding. Most softwares are overcoming it: VLC, FFMPEG which is what VLC uses seem to work ok. The alexa devices seem to not be able to establish connection either because of this and it is possible that it is the same problem with synology? Have you tried setting it up as an ONVIF cam?

took out my ezviz and installed my laview one. no chime still.

chime works when i short wires.
something must be going on with the servers, like a few pages back, there was a link to the ezviz wireless doorbell.

No, I would have to flash other firmware to enable onvif functionality. Would really like to avoid that (brick risk)...

What's weird is that others on this forum actially managed to get it working with rtsp...

Flashing is no longer a big deal like it was at first as long as you have a desktop PC with wifi or a laptop to run Batch Config on. As for bricking, holding reset down as you power on the VDB has fixed every one aside for 2 or 3 posters. They had to rename the firmware file, copy it to an SDCard, then do the reset with power and that fixed them.

Does anyone have a unit that is bricked or know of anyone that is still bricked and this did not fix them?

On a side note, the big problem now seems to be newer firmware (and auto update it seems) so get it from the links on the 101 that are older unless some one who has tested/using it sends it too you. Not a huge deal but a lot of chimes have stopped working on the newer/latest updates. Think they are still tracking it down though so it could be some thing else.

Here are my Blue Iris settings, I don't have a Synology. Maybe this will help you.

Mainstream (Think this is more for Blue Iris Profile):

/Streaming/Channels/1?transportmode=unicast&profile=Profile_1

Also be sure to try VLC to check your stream (From our 101):

⦁ RTSP Streaming for VLC (VideoLAN Media Player) Under Media/Open Network Stream (Ctrl+N)...Enter your RTSP Link/Info for Live Video Stream

Ok - gathered my courage and flashed the Hikvision firmware. Everything went smooth. Can add the camera in synology now as ONVIF.

Thx guys - this forum(post) is of immense value to new users like myself.

Big cheers
Great!!!

I use Synology Surveillance Station, and have used the DB1 in plain rtsp for months, then I decided to switch to hikvision fw with ONVIF for better flexibility, funcionalities and integration.

You made a wise choice.

I do have a bricked RCA HSDB2 sitting here (bought inexpensively on ebay) which I have not been successful with reviving so far.

Seller stated "I did a factory reset to change WiFi credentials and now the ring is red solid. Can't do anything with it and don't feel like messing with reloading firmware." I bought it as a cheap gamble to add a doorbell cam to my garage side door if I can get it working. I might have gambled $50 on a lost cause, but I've done dumber things.

It didn't come with the SD card, so I am using a 16GB SanDisk class 10 card that I had laying around. Formatted FAT32, and I've tried copying the RCA firmware (two copies of the file; original filename and renamed to digicap.dav) to SD, and have tried this with Hik firmware present as well.

I've given it hours to let any residual charge bleed away. Held down reset, while applying power. The red ring comes on immediately, along with the camera IR LEDs. IR LEDs go out after a few seconds. Red ring will blink off 1/2 sec then back on once, then maybe 20-30 sec later there will be a very brief blink off/on (1/4 sec or less). Powering it with a 24 VAC lawn sprinkler transformer which I've used successfully for bench setup of my other RCA doorbells.

Seems I can't get it to pick up the firmware file from the sdcard and start loading.

So I do not want to discourage you but we had a period of several RCA Doorbells brick when Nelly's firmware was applied, earlier this year. Not sure if any recovered, but that was before it was discovered one can recover from a brick by doing what you did. Have you concerned trying another firmware, I would just stay away from Nelly's. Try holding the reset button down longer after applying power, before releasing.

Argus

Had the same thing happen to me.
After reading through the 101 and various posts I did the following and it recovered.
Turn off power and wait for the red LEDs to go out
disconnect power kit box and chime if connected
remove sd card and format to FAT32
copy the HIK firmware to the card as downloaded
copy the HIK firmware to the card renamed to digicap.dav (so you have 2 files on the card)
reinstall SD card
press and hold reset button
apply power
LEDs will flash once, do not release reset button
continue to hold the reset button until LEDs turn blue and doorbell announces reset successful
This is a combination of various suggestions on here so not sure if all are necessary as I was trying different things as I read them.
The above is the combination I had when it came back to life..

One thing I would add is the SDCard size, I could not get this to work with what ever size it came with but it did work when I used a 1gig card. More have posted this worked/fixed the problem for them as well. As for how long to hold down reset after restoring power, hold it till you get the 2nd voice prompt (one is reset complete and I forget the other one) then an extra 10sec.

Thanks David - for the response and all you've done assembling the info in this very long-running thread into the 101, and the repeat efforts to help people individually. I had already seen the posts from Argus and Skinah by finding them through the 101. So far, I've made attempts with the RCA firmware and the Hik firmware - no luck.

If I can get this thing to respond, goal is to arrive at LaView firmware (which my other two RCAs run) after a brief stint with EzViz firmware to disable the RCA logo from the video output. If I can get it to respond...

This is interesting info - thanks! I don't have any micro sdcards that small. For reference, my other two RCAs came with a 16GB class 10 unbranded card.

I tried repartioning my 16GB card to have just a 1GB FAT32 partition & the rest unallocated, but it didn't help. Just did another retry with 1GB FAT, same result :(

Here is a video of what it's doing. I'm not holding the reset button anymore in the video, but my releasing the button after several minutes of holding it doesn't change the behavior at all.

You can see a short blip at 0:02, longer blip around 0:07, and another short blip around 0:39. That's the only feedback I'm getting, in a loop.

I’m currently writing my EZVIZ DB1’s rtsp stream, as well as an EZVIZ D3WN’s rtsp stream, 24/7 to my Synology Surveillance Station. What else will flashing HikVision firmware that supports ONVIF to my DB1 provide me functionality-wise? For instance, does it pass along PIR motion detection alerts on a secondary channel?

And why the hell does EZVIZ release new firmware and NOT include ONVIF support that their parent company already has working? Rhetorical question, I know...

I know that the RCA with HIK firmware sends the PIR to Blue Iris along with the same live video stream over ONVIF on port80. I have NO MOTION at all in BI setup but the VDB sends an "External Trigger" when some one walks up to the door. Odd enough pushing the ring button does NOT send a trigger. As for how this will work with your synology setup I would wait for some one who has one to chime in.

I was referring to ONVIF functionality and integration. For example, I finally managed to be able to reboot through command line using ONVIF. You can also instruct SSS to reboot the camera base on some events, etc.

Regarding the rethorical question: ezviz are totally crazy, and looking at what they're doing with chimes not working anymore, I think they are also not very good on fw developement.

When I'll cable my house with ethernet, I'll change doorbell to a PoE doorbell system. I'm done with this crappy company not supporting users like it should.
