Hi all,

To date I've been recording my cameras to a Synology NAS, but I'd like to move to a HikVision NVR or something similar, but when reading the specs I'm getting a little confused, as I don't fully understand the specs for my requirement.

Eg the specs say 12MB recording on the DVR, I'm guessing 12MB altogether? They also say 80Mbps input, my 2x DS-2CD2132-I (2048x1536/20) come in at about 2.5MB, meaning adding the additional 4 cameras I'll be at 7.5MB/8MB, and I still have 2x DS-2CD2185FWD-IS (3840x2160/20) to add, and I'm sure these will require about 2MB each if not more.

The cameras I currently have are

2x DS-2CD2185FWD-IS (3840x2160/20)
2x DS-2CD2132-I (2048x1536/20)

and I'm planning to add 4x https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07ZNXZ56P (2304x1296/20) Revotech 1080P cameras.

I was looking at the DS-7608NI-I2-8P on Amazon, but I'm not 100% sure this can handle the input from the 8 cameras I'm planning to send to it?
  • Up to 2-ch@12 MP/16-ch@1080p decoding capacity
  • Incoming Bandwidth - 80 Mbps 256 Mbps
  • Recording Resolution - 12 MP/8 MP/6 MP/5 MP/4 MP/3MP/1080p/UXGA/720p /VGA/4CIF /DCIF/2CIF/CIF/QCIF
Is this model ok for my needs or is there any other options available that you might know of, like the cheaper DS-7608NI-K2/8P even (amazon)? I'm just looking for the NVR as I have the hard drives already.

Thanks!

It sounds like you are already planning to fill an 8-channel NVR with 8 cameras.
I predict it would not be long before you decide you want to add another, or swap one of the HD cameras for UHD models.
So maybe consider starting off with a 16-channel model.

For the same reason - a model with a little better processing power such as the I2 instead of the K2 will cope better as you change out the lower-end cameras going forward.
The input bandwidth from the cameras is the aggregate bitrate they are generating.
You will likely be using around 5-10Mbps per camera depending on resolution and codec so the 8-channel one is a bit light.

If you are going to use 8 ports on an NVR, buy a 16 port NVR.

It is recommend to use the same manufacture for the NVR as your cameras. It is also recommend to NOT mix different camera manufactures on the NVR, you will loose camera features. Also NEVER use Reolink cameras, they are non standard junk.

Thanks guys! I ended up getting the DS-7716NI-I4/16P(B), I was hoping to spend about 300/400 but ended up getting this for about 550, so happy out, although costing a good bit more than planned, it’s got 4 drives in it now and lots of room and ability to expand ;)
