@vandyman , as for taking your chances, just consider that we've had a quarter million dead more or less from this thing in just 8 or 9 months, despite massive lockdowns, masking, and so on. If we hadn't done those things, we would have a much higher death toll. Now that it's surging again, we have to redouble our efforts. Consider that besides the deaths, millions have had horrible illnesses that go on for weeks (frequently) or months (in some cases). So many people I talk to don't recognize how precarious the situation was back in the spring and how close to an even worse situation we got. Let's not slack off now that we're a few months away from mass vaccinations. Fortunes can be rebuilt; lives can't be recreated.

@David L I'm not sure I'm following you, but a few things to consider: vaccinations aren't perfect (measeles vaccine is very good though: ~97% effective with the full two dose regimen). Measles vaccines work when most people are vaccinated and thus even given imperfect function of the vaccine, the likelihood of someone infectious spreading it to others is low. Because measles is SO VERY infectious, in that it remains infectious suspended in air for hours (such as air in an elevator), it's important that nearly everyone be immunized. I believe the "threshold" of the population being vaccinated for the vaccine to be effective is up around 93%... any less and there are enough people to spread it, statistically. This is why most school districts require kids be up on their shots to go to public school. Some communities, both very conservative and very liberal (at both extremes) seem to foster folks that think they know better and become anti-vaxxers. This is why measles is on the upswing, in the last couple years, as laws have gotten more permissive with more exceptions.

As far as COVID-19, once the vaccines are determined safe (as well as the already reported initial take on effectiveness), I'll get myself and my family in line, given that it's likely the roll-out will be to high risk folks like doctors and the elderly first.

My parents are in their late seventies and they need to see a specialist doctor. With the lock down they can not see the doctors. Just like this past spring.
If they can not see there doctors, they will more likely die. I am not sure t a 100% sure, but I believe they already had the covid back in February. I would go over too their home on Sundays, along with other family members and we all got sick at the same time.
So again, the lock down will kill my parents.
Keep on preaching your crazy BS. It is killing people in more ways than the fucking covid 19.

My last post of the day: I'm not preaching full/total China style lock downs with no access to doctors.

I'm saying people should wear masks, not go clubbing, minimize indoor gatherings. Yeah, it sucks if you own a restaurant or a gym. I'm all for govt assistance / PPP style help to businesses. And yes, I'm willing to take a tax increase to pay for it.

But if we don't do these basics the need for more severe isolation steps will increase.

I also agree there are bad consequences of staying indoors all the time and other problems like diabetes... But the hospitals aren't full of those people, they are full of Covid patients.

My/Our father passed in August of this year, not of Covid-19, he was tested several times while in ICU, but of Congestive Heart Failure. We the family, feel that he did not receive the adequate care he would of received prior to this Pandemic. How can we say this? It was Extremely difficult to get proper care in the Assisted Living facility, many companies was only doing phone calls, he had a company prior to him entering the facility come check on him twice a month, they started mid-year last year, a Wellness Nurse, they stopped this personal contact and only called their patients during the Pandemic. Ok, this we are not so much questioning, but think of how many people lost this care. The Nurse would check vitals, make sure he was taking his medicine, make sure he was eating properly, etc. All of that stopped. The phone calls were useless. We found out later they lied to us saying they were still caring for Dad, when in fact their care was only the phone calls. This started a chain of events that removed him from his home (Dad lived 7 hours away from us), of being placed into Assisted Living Care.

Since we were not allowed in the facility, we did everything we could to get Dad as much care as we could, his Doctor was only doing Video Calls at the time, Dad did not have a smart phone, we did get some of the staff to help with their phones but it was limited. Dad also was declining this year with memory lost, so it was pretty much a useless video call. There is a lot more to the story but as a family we felt useless/helpless do to all the Pandemic restrictions. We also feared sending Dad to Emergency every time his oxygen levels would drop or his blood pressure would elevate. The hospitals told us they would not even admit him but send him back.

What is my point? Many, many others have died due to this lockdown for this very same or similar reason. Do we have the answer, no, but facts are Covid-19 is not the only thing killing people during this Pandemic.

So, I am all for masks or whatever helps slowdown the spread. Those who are more vulnerable/high risk, it should be common sense for them and not just for this virus, influenza, etc. To me life is all about odds, you can lesson your odds of many things happening in your life by the choices you make, either good or bad, as long as you are not harming others. My bad choices in my youth greatly increased my odds of getting into trouble, maybe I should of wore a mask back then, just kidding Actually in a way I did or I would have a lot more kids calling me Dad today. LOL

BUT those choices, in my opinion, are mine to make, not the Government, nor some Health organization practicing medicine, nor the Media, and nor even a Religion. My present fear is not this virus, which will pass with time, but us losing our Freedoms, the freedom to make our own choices and not be dictated by those whose conclusions/decisions change direction like the Wind. I can create my own Wind!!! As you guys can tell

I pray everyone here stay safe, use common sense, to wear a Mask or Not, it should be your choice.

I'm very sorry for your loss, and your family did the right thing to make sure cause of death was correctly reported. I don't know what month this happened in, but I do know that early on tests weren't fully available and at that time the treatment and precautions taken were the same whether it was COVID-19 or not. It's no excuse for recording COVID-19 as cause of death when there was a definitive set of tests showing it wasn't this.
There's a persistent narrative that doctors are paid more if it's COVID-19, and this is patently untrue. I know plenty of doctors and their pay isn't defined by the diagnosis. What DOES go on, is that when someone comes in the door that is potentially a COVID-19 case, the PPE and other precautions that must be taken do cost a lot, and since it is at best hours or at worst days before the facility will know whether or not the person has COVID-19 or not, there is incentive at the administrative level to assume COVID-19, so that they can be reimbursed for the extra precautions. This was more prevalent early on. Now, things are more streamlined and for the most part facilities don't have to squabble about it.

Still, without accurate data, we can't manage the pandemic. Accuracy is critical.
