that ip was from looking at the status on the lan connection on the pc.
So that's the PC IP address?
It's always best to connect both devices to a switch or router. The tftp updater timing doesn't work well when they are directly connected.
If you do that - does the link detect light show as active?

When you ran the Hikvision tftp updater, and powered on the camera, what did the tftp updater status window show?

That's correct, and good.
And nothing on the tftp status window when you power cycle the camera?

Did Windows pop up a firewall dialogue box the first time you started tftpserve.exe to ask if it should allow access?
That's important, and necessary to allow the 'probe' packets from the camera to reach the tftp updater.
If not - try disabling, temporarily, the Windows firewall and power cycle the camera.

Ok managed to update firmware with tftp with it saying success. But still can't find it on sadp or mcd with arp-a. It only shows it on then when updating then it disappears again.

That's good. Presumably you changed something to fix it.
"System update completed" ?
What version of firmware did you apply / can you provide a link to the source?

But still can't find it on sadp
Which does suggest it's not working. Even in 'min-system recovery mode' it would show in SADP.
With it being reset to defaults on a tftp update, and assuming fairly recent firmware, the default IP address should be 192.168.1.64
With the PC on the same IP address range, do you get a response to a ping?
And if so, what does the browser show when you point it to 192.168.1.64 ?
