Just wondering how can I get better image quality at night from this camera. I've it zoomed all the way, and compared to a couple of 5442s 3.6mm, the image is so bad. The focus seems okay at the car right at the end of the road, but the grass and any detail on the ground is all lost:

the 5442s are so much better:

Try these - some of that looks like codec issues.

H264
CBR
4092 bitrate
15FPS
15 i-frame

Pretty much my settings, I'm just a bit above at 6144kbit bitrate

Actually I completely messed up stating the other 2 cameras were 5442s, around it, they are actually IPC-T5241TM-AS. the 5442s were installed in other areas and I ended up mixing them up.

So, the other cameras are doing a pretty good job.

I'm planning to try it at a different position tomorrow, but I'm not sure how the positioning would make it look like this.

I'm not at all impressed by the 2231. It has a significant better low light spec than the 5231, yet I see no overall performance difference between them. My recommendation is to get a 5442, even a fixed focal, over the 2231. Even with the 2231 at maximum optical zoom, a 6mm 5442 with digital zoom competes favorably during the day and blows the 2231 away at night. I posted a few side-by-side samples in another thread Detecting wildlife with Dahua cameras .

I was after the low megapixel sensor with a good physical size specifically for night footage expecting it was going to be better than the 4+ megapixel cameras as I read some reports around here. Maybe it was not a very good choice.

Physically, the 2231 and 5442 varifocal are the same size, and the 5442 fixed focal is a bit smaller.

I meant the image sensor size, I expected the 2 megapixel 1/2.8 to be better than this considering I got 2 units 5241 that in theory got a similar sensor, but as you can see in the images before have much better results.

The two pics with (apparently) 5241’s have an external light source in the near FOV. That’s your difference.

.the 5241s are crossing each other's FOV, that is each other IR light. I switched the IR off all of them to compare, it did not make any difference.

I'm showing here all the way through the zoom levels. I wonder if the IR reflection on the left post would make any difference when zoom in all the way

The 2MP 1/2.8 sensor and 4MP 1/1.8 sensor have the same pixel size, 2.9µm x 2.9µm. I'm attributing the 5442's better low light performance to its sensor having new and improved technology.

I've repositioned all the cameras for further testing, avoiding any IR from other cameras or other surfaces on the way. The IPC-T2231T-ZS still a bit odd, it loses so much detail when zoomed in, I don't understand why.

In comparison during the day:

the T5241TM-AS is much better in the same light conditions:

The IR strength is not enough when you zoom, so normally for nearby watching the fixed lens is better than the motorized lens, 5241 series use a little better chips.
